Built by railroad baron James J. Hill in 1883, the bridge allowed for increased movement of people and goods across the river. It served as a working railroad bridge until 1965 but is still seen as a symbol of the railroad age. Rehabilitation of this National Historic Engineering Landmark began in 1980. Traffic on the bridge is now characterized by a much slower pace. Mostly used by walkers and bicyclists, the bridge is one of the best ways to enjoy the view of St. Anthony Falls. While here, check out Mill Ruins Park and take a tour of Mill City Museum. Mill City Museum was built within the ruins of Washburn A Mill, the flagship mill of the Washburn-Crosby Co. (later General Mills). It was the largest and most technologically advanced flour mill in the world when it was completed in 1880. From 1880 to 1930, Minneapolis was the flour milling capital of the world.
Catch a performance, take a tour, grab a coffee, eat some distinctive dining and explore the building, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel. Check out the "Endless Bridge" which is a 178 foot cantilevered bridge and it gives some of the best views of the Mississippi and the Stone Arch Bridge. Also, check out the "Yellow Room," which is on the 9th floor and is an observation box made of amber/yellow colored glass windows and floor. It looks north over the Mississippi and has awesome views of the the riverfront district: Stone Arch Bridge, St. Anthony Falls, Mill City Museum, Gold Medal & Pillsbury Parks, Nicollet Island and the St. Anthony Main area. Both the Endless Bridge and Yellow Room are open to the public during normal business hours.
This is a great place to check out! The Sculpture Garden is open from 6am until midnight, 365 days a year. The Walker Arts Center is an awesome museum with several exhibits to check out, skyline mini golf on the rooftop and cute gift shops to find some fun souvenirs.
A staple in Minnesota, Como Park has been around for over 100 years! Open 365 days a year, Como Zoo and Conservatory is a great place to explore and enjoy. There are animals, beautiful gardens, art and you can even take a ride on a restored antique carousel, built in 1914.
Take a tour of the Vikings home turf! I (Hannah), took Jacob on a tour here on one of our trips up north! It's pretty amazing and very inexpensive! Book here: https://www.usbankstadium.com/tours/public-tours
When you're in Minnesota, you're in craft beer country! If you like craft beer, I've included a link with some of the best breweries in the Minneapolis area to try! I took Jacob to Summit Brewery on one of our visits north while we were dating. We took a tour, tried their beers, bought some merch and couldn't resist the food trucks outside. It was a ton of fun! Another great one to try is Pryes Brewing Company.
The land of 10,000 lakes! If you've never been to MN, you have to visit a lake! Chain of Lakes is literally a chain of lakes in the Minneapolis area, which include Lake Bde Maka Ska (formerly known at Lake Calhoun), Lake of the Isles and Lake Harriet. Lake Harriet is one of my favorites, because it is sailboats only and there's also a great bandstand. There is a paved path around all three, so you can walk, jog or maybe even rent some bikes for the day. You can also rent kayaks and paddle boards and take them out on the lake!
If you're going to make a little vacation out of your trip up north, you have to visit the north shore! North of Minneapolis, you'll find the dreamiest, quaint, little city built in a hill on Lake Superior. Accessible by the Atlantic Ocean, Duluth is the western most point of the Great Lakes. Duluth, MN and Superior, WI share the Superior harbor, and together make up the largest port of the Great Lakes. In Duluth, watch the ships come in under the aerial lift bridge, visit the US only all-freshwater aquarium - The Great Lakes Aquarium and Minnesota Point - the worlds longest freshwater baymouth bar, spanning 6 miles. Also, visit the William A. Irvin museum ship on the waterfront, Glensheen Mansion, Canal Park, Enger Tour for a great view and eat at Fitger's! Up the shore, check out Palisade Head, Gooseberry Falls, Betty's Pies, Two Harbors, Splitrock Lighthouse and if you're really feeling adventurous, only 151 miles up the shore, you'll be in Canada.
