Medical school was absolutely a crazy journey to get to for both of us. It seemed like random happenstances that built my road to A. T. Still University, and I honestly wouldn't take any part of it back; not even the big amounts of hardships, struggles, and last minute life-changing decisions. Which is fantastic, because that's how I met RJ. We often talk about how we actually met, when it actually happened or what. Honestly, we both think we would've met one way or another because we both happened to interview at the same medical schools. Somehow we had not met during orientation or the first few sets of classes since we were neither in the same CHC nor same circle of friends. Oh well. But then came our first Osteopathic Principles and Practices lab in which we were partnered up with a new person every class that you practiced osteopathic techniques and treatments on each other. I remember looking at the partner list they sent out, hoping it was someone from the Brooklyn CHC so that I would know who to look for at 7:30am in a class that required us to be prepared to take our shirts off (don't worry, we were required to wear sports apparel underneath) so that you could find skeletal landmarks on an actual human. My partner? Rulon Corry. My reaction? Who the heck is that? I immediately texted the BK group chat (love you guys) and asked if anyone knew who this guy was. Someone said he went by RJ. Someone said he was a tall white guy (which honestly is no help whatsoever if you have seen the guys in our class). Someone said he had glasses (again, no help, thanks guys).
I went to the class the next morning, sitting close to the back so that I could look for the lone tall guy with glasses with a confused look on his face about how to pronounce my name (I had no idea how to pronounce his name either). I would love to say that our eyes met across the room and we instantly knew that the other was the one we were looking for. But no. It was more of a sheepish, "Uh, are you my partner?" to the confused-looking lone glasses-wearing guy, with an immediate, "I'm Finianne, Fini for short". To which the guy was like, "Nope, sorry. *looks at the chart I'm holding out* Oh, that's him *pointing at another lone tall glasses-wearing guy*". Well. Being all nervous because of that mistake, I immediately launched into taking control of the situation with the goal of getting through the lab as quickly as possible. Thankfully it was a super not-awkward at all lab. Ha. Hah. HA. Yeah right. Thanks, ATSU-SOMA for making a great ice-breaker of a introductory lab. It was a lab teaching us how to feel the different layers of skin in order to differentiate between layers such as the myofascial planes, muscle, fat, etc. To do it, we essentially were stroking each others arms, not in a romantic/spark-starting-the-relationship type of way, but in a, hurry-up-so-this-will-stop-being-awkward type of way. Finally that section was over and hoping for a less awkward module to follow, we found ourselves having to learn how to do a complete osteopathic structural exam. Read: take your shirt off and poke at angles of bones. Definitely left that lab thinking, at least that guy was nice but probably not gonna ever see him again. After a few weeks of looking for study groups, I had made some friends with other people so we established our own study room that we spent a majority of our days in. Somehow RJ ended up joining us and our little study group became a tight knit group and my closest friends in medical school. And that's how RJ and I became best friends.
Living in different cities after dating for less than a year is not ideal for anyone. We found a way to make it work though. It meant 4 hour bus rides on weekends and late night phone calls leading to tired rotation days. After 2 years of the long distance dating, I knew I wanted to be with her, even knowing that while finishing our 4th year and matching into residency, there is a chance that we won't be in the same place. So I planned and plotted how to best propose to her. After I got permission from Nimfa, Fini's mom, I came up with my plan. I enlisted the help of her sister, Jill, and her roommate, Teagan. They would help to take pictures and facetime Fini's mom when it happened. I found the perfect ring while I was in Arizona on a rotation and hid it so she wouldn't be able to find it. I knew that she would already be suspicious as we had talked about getting married and I told her I would give her a year so we could plan our wedding. Before the beginning of our 4th year, we were able to spend a couple weeks together. I decided that I wanted to base the proposal off of one of mine and her favorite dates when we had gone to Barnes & Noble and picked books for each other. In our 1st year at medical school we had bonded over visiting a bookstore and talking about Manga that we had both read. I went while she was at work and found a comic where the antagonist proposes. I then hid the book and cut a hole in it where I could place the ring.
The day of the date, I told her I wanted to take her out on a picnic to help her relax before a test. My accomplices waited at the picnic spot while Fini and I went to B&N to pick out books for one another to read. I pretended to not know which book to get. She mentioned the one I had bought her previously and was thinking she would like the sequel. Fortunately, neither of us could remember the title so I grabbed a copy of the book I already bought. We left and got to the picnic spot. We started to eat but I was so nervous that I couldn't wait. I suggested that we take out the books so that we could read while eating. I grabbed the book I had prepared and began to describe the plot of the book. I told her about my favorite part, where the main character proposes to his love interest. I opened the book to where I had the ring and asked her to marry me. When I had opened the book she ended up with a blank look on her face, not quite sure if it was real. As I asked if she would marry me, she said yes. Her sister and roommate came out and congratulated us, complete with her mom and brother on Facetime.
