We met coaching opposing teams. The story as he tells it... his team was losing going into half. Having the focus of high school boys, they were telling their coach he should get the cute other coach's phone number, and if he did they would come back to win. He made up some excuse about wanting to schedule another game to get her contact info at halftime. Went back to his boys with the digits he just got and they rallied to win the game. Her side... an awkward exchange at halftime, not exactly the standard time to discuss rematches, and no recollection of who won. In fairness his memory for such things is much better, but so is his capacity to mold a story to fit his narrative! That was in 2005. Needless to say they took their time in letting their relationship develop! First, months before he called, then got the response of who is this? He invited her to a masters water polo scrimmage and took her to Mario's restaurant before they went to play. While it was not seen as a first date at the time, it was the same place that 14 short years later he would propose. In the meantime their friendship grew... it's funny the little moments you remember in which you found yourself falling in love. A song lyric that the other surprisingly finishes, an outstretched hand while riding beach cruisers down the peninsula. The time he realized she was different because she called him out on his you know what, and the many times she realized he would do anything for her. Most importantly realizing they shared a faith in Christ that would help guide their lives together and hold them together through trials. What their friends saw was two people that had a blast together, made each other and hopefully a few other people smile along the way, but were best buddies and they were and are correct. Both are excited to truly be marrying their best friend!
