Hole. In. The. Wall. When coming from mainland down into the keys- you can take A1A OR Card Sound (Shoot to the left after the last 'racetrack' Gas station).. It is a 1$ toll by plate- about halfway through the mangrove alley you will find this place on your right. Its usually packed, service isn't great, but we stopped once and loved it anyway. If you take A1A and want to stop, we have another recommendation- Gilberts Resort- Very cool place for a snack and a drink.
Nice paddle shop, paddle with a guide or alone (very doable). You can paddle one direction to some mangroves that are AMAZING and then back the other way to the secluded Tiki Key out in the ocean. They will tell you which way to paddle first depending on winds etc. Our initials are carved in the Tree on Tiki Key with dates from 3 times we have stopped. Last time was after Hurricane Irma and it was brown and leveled.. but the three was still there. The English lady often sends some bottled water with us to give to the Iguanas on the island as they depend on rain water to drink. You can rent double kayaks- i would NOT recommend paddle boards for the amount of water you are covering.
The Most KEYS vibe you can get in one place. AMAZING food. Even better View- Make reservations online as early as you can (same day seating possible) and request a Glider Table. We've been going here since our first trip to the Keys and we ALWAYS stop with our friends. It has changed.. but it is still the best.
GOOD PRICES-AMAZING FOOD-Outdoor dinning around the water- Indoor dinning a bit bar like with pool tables. If you are there in the evening they usually have a LOUD classic rock bank playing on their Floating Stage (dock). you can walk around to the left and go out past the noise to the tiki beach area. We always stop here and love it. We stopped here after our last reef adventure and getting stuck in a hurricane on the boat.
Votes BEST stop in the Keys! Our rental house is about a mile from here, this is also where we would love to meet up with everyone available Sunday evening around 6pm. You HAVE to feed the Tarpon. There's a little tiki village with shops and a restaurant. You can rent jet skis, kayaks, boats, and do eco tours from here.
Find a way to get here.. if you're going to take a snorkel tour- find one that goes here! We plan to rent a boat to go out for the day and stop at the sandbar for a bit where you can find floating food trucks.. this is located out from Bud and Marys marina, Robbies of Islamorada, and our rental house. The sea life under this lighthouse is phenomenal. The reef is 3 miles off of the shore and travels down 221 miles from Florida down the keys. The water inside the reef is called the straits of Florida. The reef breaks a lot of the current that would produce waves in the keys. If you see any waves, they are very minimal. On the outside of the reef you will find a deep drop from about 20' to 200' quickly, and further out 1200' deep. The Gulf Stream flows on the outside perimeter of the reef. The depth inside the reef is 5-20' deep and crystal clear.
Go allll the way to the end and park, to your right where the palm trees are! Shade and beautiful sand with a view of amazing water. You can occasionally rent kayaks here and paddle out to the little island. Love stopping at this beach to catch some rays for an hours or so before we move on.
Must Stop- one of a kind place frequented by the late Jimmy Buffet. Get the Stuffed Hogfish!! They catch their hogfish fresh daily- you wont regret this somewhat pricy meal! You will also fell like you may have taken a wrong turn on your way- you did not- keep following the GPS!
If you're a bit exhausted with the price of food- Stop Here! You will not be disappointed. I LOVE the Shrimp wrap- I get it every time. With no Onion- add Fries. This is a dock side spot- while you wait for food walk over past the gas pump (left) and go to the fish cleaning station- you can find nurse sharps, Tarpon, and sometimes manatees in the hole. They also have a play place for kids.
We always eat seafood in the Keys.. but once in a while you need a BURGER- THIS PLACE!! The Smash Burger- Incredible.. better than anywhere else. This is a Bar, eat at the bar or grab ah hightop- Open air, on the main street just off Duval in a nice area!
There is only ONE sea plane that travels to the Dry Tortuga. You have to book this several months in advance! $466.00 Per Person! 40 minute plane ride from key west airport, landing in the water in the Gulf Of Mexico at Dry Tortuga. This was Jays first ever plane ride, the pilot let him ride in the front with him! We went at their latest reservation which put us on the island by our selves (group of 8). The ferry had already left, the sea plane captain took those on the island back to key west, and we were in the middle of the ocean on the island- Alone! we took it a step further and decided to snorkel around the entire fort on the outside of the mote. It was about a mile snorkel, just Jay and I, while I was 34 weeks pregnant. It was by far the most memorable and off the Grid thing we've ever done. Our pilot retuned a few hours later to pick up up and we had a sunset flight home. I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E
