They met at Wiggly Field when Jess was bartending post college and Kody subbed for a work volleyball team. They spent many nights across the bar sharing glances and witty banter until the night Kody mustered up enough confidence to ask her on a date. Jess happily accepted the invitation and proceeded to pick the worst movie shown in all of 2018, Welcome to Marwen. Despite this initial rough patch, they went on to have a second date at El Mezcel and she even attended Kody's work Christmas party. Since that Christmas party, they could not stop thinking about each other and spent the next three years as friends, however, always pondering the "what if?". In late summer of 2021, Jess reached out Kody to connect and catch a drink at a local spot in Wausau. Though the connect was strictly insurance education related to work, Kody took it as something more. That was all it took for him to realize she was the one, and he was not going to wait another three years to ask her to be his girlfriend. As they sat in her car on October 16th, 2022 after getting home from a Packer Game, Kody solidified their relationship. Since that day, they have spent their time continuing to enjoy sporting events, hiking trips, drinks at local spots, family and friend outings and many cuddles at home with her (their) dog, Mabel.

Kody always knew that he was going to ask Jess to be his wife, but the only plan he had to pop the big question, was that he wanted it to be a surprise. He purchased her ring in June of 2024, and had initially planned to ask her father for her hand in marriage on the golf course up north. Things did not go as planned and as days became weeks, and weeks became months he knew that he had to seize any opportunity he had with Russ solo. This time came, not solo, during the Wausau Christmas parade. When he had a couple minutes with everyone's attention directed towards the floats; Kody received an empathic yes from her father. Days later, Kody had Mabel pose with the engagement ring he purchased on her nose and paw and wrapped the picture frame along with all her other presents. Not knowing if that was going to be the first or last present she was going to open, he wanted to remain a surprise. After spending all day with family, Kody and Jess went back home Christmas night to share the gifts they got for each other. It was the 2nd to last present she chose to open, and Kody had the ring in his pocket and waited for her to connect the dots. It took a good 10-15 seconds for her to realize this was the moment. After Kody got down on one knee, and Jess said yes, they shared this incredible night as a newly engaged couple with a lifetime of love to continue.
