Hi family and friends, Most of you know that Eric and I met working at Chick-Fil-A Victory Boulevard, in Yorktown Virginia! (We are in fact a God orchestrated, “Chick-Fil-Ationship”! Haha) We had only worked together for a few months, and we knew of each other, but it wasn’t until our mutual friend group had occasionally begun hanging out, before we personally connected. Fast forwarding a month or so, one morning while I (Hannah) was working at our drinks station and he (Eric) was working at our drive thru window, we connected over the fact that Eric would be leaving for a week, to go play piano for the worship team at his church's summer camp. Then out of the blue, I stated that he would be missed! He said, “I don’t know about all that haha.” That’s when I reassured him that I would miss him! A week later, after he came back from camp, we ended up “coincidentally” working the same double shift together and had the same break times. We ended up sitting together to eat, talked about his camp experience, worship music that we liked, and other things we enjoy! Later that night after closing hours, our friend had some car trouble. We both decided to wait in the parking lot with her. We sat in beach chairs from my trunk, listened to music over his Bluetooth speaker, and just talked. Once our friend got safely picked up, Eric said, “Well, you wanna keep talking?” I replied, “Yeah, sure, I don’t really wanna go home yet.” He smiled at me and said, “Yeah, me neither.” So, we sat in his car and continued to talk. That same night we ended up going on a three hour car ride- even though we both had to work a 5:45am shift that morning!! The next couple of weeks before he went back to college was full of after work car rides, Spotify music, spontaneous adventures, tire troubles (that lead to mad tire patching skills), new food places, and the realization that we had quickly become best friends, who never wanted to stop hanging out with one another. We preferred each others company! Fast forwarding a couple of weeks, one night before Eric had to head back to college I told him, “Ya know Eric Shaver you’re pretty cool! (Which is something he would occasionally tell me but I had never told him!) He looked up at me, smiled, and said, “Cool enough to go out on a date with?” And, me, after freaking out in my head while trying my hardest to “keep my cool” I replied with a cool, calm, and (who am I kidding) obvious, “Yeah!” Hahaha! That’s just the beginning of our story! That was only about two and a half weeks in:) Ask us more about our story- it has God’s goodness and faithfulness written all over it!! It is Him that we are who we are and how we are where we are at in our relationship today! Sincerely, Hannah & Eric
It was during the first few weeks of hanging out with Hannah Baker that I brought her to one of my favorite places in Newport News, Denbigh Boat dock. I had found out that she had never tried a Gyro before so I took her to Mr. Gyro and Burgers (one of the finest establishments in the 757) and we ate Gyros while sitting on the dock. I vividly remember turning to my right, looking at her, realizing that I loved being around her and wanted to be more than just friends. It was driving away after this that I thought to myself if things did work out I would propose at that boat dock (and that’s what I did) ...Almost 2 years later... It was Memorial Day weekend and I had everything ready and planned out. We were going to: 1) get coffee, 2) drive the colonial parkway, 3) get Gyros at Mr. Gyro and Burgers, 4) dance on Denbigh boat dock, and 5) I would spin her then drop on one knee and ask Hannah Baker to be my wife. Simple enough right? WRONG! My plan began to crumble as Mr. Gyro and Burgers was closed. We ended up getting Burgers at a different restaurant. Everything felt back on track though as we eventually found ourselves at the boat dock dancing. It was a beautiful day and there was a random photographer taking pictures. In my mind this was more than perfect. I motioned to the photographer that I was about to propose thinking he would get some awesome incognito shots of me asking Hannah Baker to marry me. (NOTE: this is where I made a fatal error.) They then yelled across the dock and asked to take our picture. I panicked and twirled Hannah Baker, dropping to one knee all while the random photographer yelled "STOP! WAIT WAIT WE ARE NOT READY!." This was not the proposal I had planned. I had intended a small, quaint, and PRIVATE setting because that is what I knew Hannah would want. Instead, what had happened was extremely rushed , chaotic, and not at all smooth or private. Hannah and I found ourselves sitting on the dock where she was in tears because of how quickly everything had happened. She felt that she had missed the moment. We went bak to the car where she apologized though her tears profusely as she did not want me to feel like I messed it up. We ended up in prayer asking God to sort out and make since of the chaotic situation that we found ourselves in. I then reached out to Hannah Baker, took the ring back (which she loved), and I asked her to dance with me on Denbigh Boat Dock for the second time that day. We made our way over to the more secluded and private side of the dock and we just danced. No random photographers yelling, no rush, no chaos. I told her how thankful I was for her and all that God had done in our lives. We both found ourselves in tears as I spun her, dropped to one knee, and asked her for the second time that day to spend the rest of our lives together. Our engagement story is hectic, not at all as was planned, but it is beautiful and I would not trade it for anything else. I am thankful that we are going into this marriage as a couple who seeks God and asks Him to bring the chaotic things of this life back into order. Thank you for reading our story and we pray that you are encouraged by it the way that we are.
