For higher end hotels (5 star), I’d recommend Los Sueños Marriott Ocean and Golf Resort, Villa Caletas Hotel, Crocs Resort and Casino. Josemar, Erica, and a good amount of the wedding party will be staying at Los Suenos Marriott. I am able to get a block of hotels for a discounted price at this hotel. For medium end hotels or vacation rentals (4 star), I’d recommend Océano Boutique Hotel, Jaco Laguna Resort & Beach Club, Bahia Encantada For cheaper hotels or condos in decent condition, I’d recommend Mar De Luz, Bird of Paradise Hotel, Beach Break Resort, and Selena There are a variety of airbnb options to choose from as well. For the adventurous and cheap, there are also hostels in Jaco.
Fly into San Jose airport only
The drive is pretty easy from San Jose to Jaco and driving isn’t too hectic. I’d recommend getting a rental car through National Rent a Car (more pricey). Adobe Rental Car is also reliable but a tad cheaper than National. If you have a credit card, you may be able to get rental car insurance through it. If you are joining a group, we would highly recommend a shuttle car. They will take you straight to your hotel for a fee. Some hotels offer a shuttle, however it is much more expensive than booking a shuttle yourself. A shuttle company we recommend is Odyssey. A mutual friend (who will also be at wedding) can offer a shuttle because he works at Odyssey. His name is Byron and his phone number is +50687405109 We HIGHLY recommend to not book a rental car through a company that is not well known or not recommended here. Expedia has a lot of hidden fees, so be conscientous of the small print.
We would recommend turning on international calling on your phone. When not using it, put in airplane mode so you don’t get roaming charges. It is very challenging to get phone minutes or SIM in Costa Rica. There is WiFi in most restaurants, hotels, etc.
Almost everyone in Jaco will speak English. In San Jose, it might be more challenging to find English speakers.
You will take the same safety precautions as you would in any big city. Nighttime in Jaco, take more precautions. Oh and massages on the street aren’t always typical massages..
Tipping is highly encouraged because most people in Costa Rica depend on tips for their living. Typically, we tip restaurant staff, bartenders, taxis, and tour guides. Cash tips are encouraged at the wedding for bartenders.
You can try surfing, it is a big surf town! Ocean swimming at Jaco beach, drinks at the beach bars, paddle boarding, ziplining, jet skiing, snorkeling, etc. For any tourism related activities, reach out to our friend Byron ahead of time and let him know that you are a friend/family of Josemar and Erica’s. Byron can be reached at +50687405109
In February, weather in Jaco is scorching hot and extremely humid, so plan accordingly. If you are traveling to other parts of Costa Rica, the weather will most likely still be hot with slight chance of rain. In La Fortuna, the weather is chilly in the evening. Bring warm clothing just in case.
Just cool clothing, a few warm clothing items if you are traveling to La Fortuna, maybe a small fan that sprays water, bathing suits, bug spray, sunscreen, and anything you’d like to bring to go out!
Food is incredible Latin food. Best fruit in the world. There are other options in the town if you aren’t liking the national food. There are grocery stores and places you can shop if you want to make food yourself, but grocery store prices are probably more expensive than eating out.
