The Adirondack High Peaks are a collection of 46 mountains above 4,000 square feet. Many people aim to become 46'ers by hiking all of them (like Emma's dad!). That being said, there are many beautiful hike options from easy to difficult. We hope you can can get out and explore, but please pack and plan accordingly! Easy - Mirror Lake Loop If hiking isn't really your thing, consider taking a stroll around Mirror Lake in Lake Placid which is about 2.6 miles and still offers beautiful lake and mountain views! Moderate - Baxter Mountain This is a 2.5 mile out-and-back that is fairly gradient with a bit of a scramble near the top. There are great views overlooking Keene Valley where Emma went to school. Advanced - Big Slide This was Kia's second 46'er. Around 7.6 miles, the ascent has great views along a ridge. Parking is a challenge and often a shuttle is required so please look up the latest parking updates for the trailhead before setting out for your day!
Seeing the ski jumps from the ground is cool, but going to the top and looking down the ramps is a must-do. there are multiple options for exploring the facility from an elevator ride up, taking a gondola, or even ziplining down to emulate the jumps. Check out their website for more details!
Whiteface Mountain is where Emma grew up learning to ski and snowboard. While obviously a lot of fun in the winter, there are multiple ways to enjoy the mountain and the views in the summer. You can take a gondola to the top of Little Whiteface or drive up a road to the top of Big Whiteface. Hiking up is also an option - Whiteface is one of the 46'ers!
If watching the Olympics versus being outside is more your thing, check out the Olympic Museum which houses history from the 1932 and 1980 Olympics which were both held in Lake Placid
This is where the Miracle on Ice occurred (when the US mens hockey team defeated the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics) and also where Emma took skating lessons from ages 6-10 (which had a slightly less miraculous outcome). During the non-winter months you can still skate inside on the rinks where so much history has occurred!
Top of the Park is on Main Street in Lake Placid and is a great place to get a drink and/or dinner overlooking Mirror Lake
Liquids and Solid is a great restaurant with an always changing seasonal menu. Reservations highly recommended!
Simply Gourmet may make some of the best sandwiches in the world. There are two locations, one on Main Street and one on Saranac Ave. We highly recommend you try them out and go early enough before their homemade bread runs out!
