Our Story

by Toby Clark

It is spring quarter of 2015 at UC Davis and we are in Lake Tahoe for Sigma Nu Formal. Emily is standing in the kitchen of the cabin as I walk up the stairs and see her for the first time (although Emily says that we had met before, but we know her version can’t be trusted). Do Emily and I immediately start dating? No. I do not even have the guts to ask for her number but somehow get her snapchat. We both go home after our freshman year and spend the entire summer talking on snapchat before I finally asked for her number. When we got back to Davis, I asked her out on a date and the next week I asked her to be my girlfriend.  We would spend the next few years loving our life in Davis while also traveling together, eating at Michelin star restaurants, and attending far too many fraternity and sorority formals. Emily went on to graduate from UC Davis undergrad in 4 years (overachiever) while I continued my victory lap as a super senior. Thankfully she stayed in Davis during her gap year while interviewing for vet school and we got to keep enjoying our time together. In 2019, she got accepted into her dream school, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (oh and I finally graduated)! My dream of becoming a stay at home husband was one step closer. Emily began school in the fall and all was going well. Then out of the blue one morning while I was in Spain, I woke up to a text that WE were getting a puppy. A few weeks later we went and picked up the true star of our relationship, Luke! It was now COVID and we spent every single day together raising Luke and watching Brooklyn-99 while still going to school and working. While being a new family was amazing, Emily informed me that vets did not make enough money for me to be a stay at home dad so I unfortunately had to leave her and Luke to begin my Masters program at Loma Linda University. While we had to do long distance, our love and commitment to one another only continued to grow. In 2022, Emily accompanied my family on a trip to Greece where I surprised her by proposing on the beach! While we had to go back to the harsh reality of long distance, we had an end in sight. The next year all of Emily’s hard work came to fruition when she became a freaking DOCTOR and we got to spend a whole weekend celebrating her! She then started her first job with Mid Valley Large Animal Services. While working there, Emily decided to "foster" a sick barn cat and Rory quickly made us a family of 4. Emily is now eagerly awaiting my graduation from medical school next year so that I can finally contribute to this family. We have had so much fun planning our wedding the last two years and cannot wait to share our big day with all of you!
