When Marty Met Emily

A True New York City Love Story

In 2015, a woman named Emily briefly met a guy named Marty in a West Village coffee shop. This would have never happened if her friend Kathleen hadn’t randomly run into the Minnesota man at a ramen shop the night before and invited him to hang out with a group the next day while she was in town from Nashville. Emily and Marty ended up sitting next to each other and had a brief chat, but they parted ways. A few weeks later Marty moved to California to become a tech reporter in Silicon Valley with no plans of coming back. Fast forward another year or so, Marty was living in New York again, and the pair re-met at an Israeli restaurant in Brooklyn soon after Emily had returned from helping Syrian refugees in Greece. It was during that conversation that Marty began to see the depth of Emily’s character through the questions she asked and the stories she told. There was a certain peace about her that helped calm Marty’s own whirlpool personality. She was beautiful and sweet, and loved art and music and wanted to be a psychologist. It was that day when Marty thought, “I kind of want to ask her out,” but he figured she had no interest in him and that she was just being polite because they were sat next to each other. And so, he never asked for her number. Fast forward again to spring 2018. Marty had been going to a church in Brooklyn for months, and one day the pair ran into each other again. They talked briefly every few weeks after church. Marty wanted to talk with Emily more and decided he should maybe ask her out the next time he saw her, but then that Sunday she had disappeared (obviously to France) so he messaged Emily on Instagram. A week later, they got coffee by the Williamsburg waterfront. Coffee by the river turned into a trip to the local gelato shop and an hour turned into three. They parted ways, and they haven’t stopped going on dates sense. And this past February in a snowy Central Park, Marty asked Emily to marry him, and she said yes.
