Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, part of the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, is a cultural and educational research center that promotes a comprehensive understanding for the significance of civil rights developments in Birmingham.

Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark

20 32nd Street North, Birmingham, AL 35222

Sloss Furnaces was once the largest manufacturer of pig iron in the world. It stands today just as it did in the late 19th century — a monument to the Industrial Revolution. With its web of pipes and towering stoves, this unique National Historic Landmark provides visitors a glimpse into Birmingham’s rich industrial heritage. It stands with pride and is a symbol of where the “Magic” began for Birmingham. When you visit Sloss Furnaces, please sign in at the Visitor Center. There you will get a self-guided tour brochure which will lead you around the site as you learn about how iron was made, the working conditions and stories of the men who worked there, and its importance to Birmingham. Inside the Visitor Center you can watch our introductory video, read storyboards of Sloss history, visit the Gift Shop, and browse the gallery filled with local art. PLEASE NOTE: the self-guided tour takes place almost entirely outside, so please plan accordingly.

Vulcan Park and Museum

Vulcan is the world’s largest cast iron statue; made of 100,000 pounds of iron and 56 feet tall, he stands at the top of Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. But Vulcan is more than just a statue—Vulcan Park and Museum features spectacular views of Birmingham, an interactive comprehensive history museum that examines Vulcan and Birmingham’s story, a premier venue for private events and a beautiful public park for visitors and locals to enjoy. With an official information center operated by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Vulcan Park and Museum serves as the first stop for visitors to the Birmingham area! Vulcan Park and Museum has free parking, accommodates tour buses and is wheelchair accessible. If you have special needs, please call 205.933.1409 before your arrival.

Birmingham Museum of Art

The Birmingham Museum of Art, one of the finest regional museums in the United States, houses a diverse collection of more than 29,000 paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and decorative arts dating from ancient to modern times. The collection presents a rich panorama of cultures, featuring the Museum’s extensive holdings of Asian, European, American, African, Pre-Columbian, and Native American art.

Alabama Theatre

1817 3rd Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203

The Alabama Theatre was used primarily as a movie palace for 55 years, with the exception of the annual Miss Alabama pageant and the weekly Mickey Mouse Club. In 1987, the owners of the facility declared bankruptcy and the theatre was purchased by Birmingham Landmarks Inc., a non-profit corporation. The new Alabama Theatre for the Performing Arts hosts many live events, as well as films. Each year the Theatre hosts over 150 events attended by a 150,000 Birmingham area citizens
