It was the first mixer before the start of medical school on a beautiful August night in Cleveland. Emeka bumped into Elizabeth and offered the first thing that came to mind: "Oh hey, I'm Emeka. Are you Nigerian?" “Nope, I grew up in Baltimore and my family is originally from the south… Something …my BOYFRIEND.” Elizabeth replied (at least that’s how Emeka heard it). Friend zone, no worries. Emeka thought. “Alright cool, well let’s meet some people!” If it isn’t obvious, Emeka and Elizabeth became great friends. They often found themselves spending time together after hangouts with friends ended, debating politics, history, social justice. Emeka, a technical person was drawn to Elizabeth’s world view that included more art, travel, and history than he had ever considered. Drawing on the popularity of 30 Rock at the time, Emeka dubbed Elizabeth “Liz Lemon”. Despite becoming close friends, their friendship remained platonic. After all, she still had a boyfriend. Fast forward to Winter of 2012. Elizabeth and her boyfriend had broken up and naturally she told her friend Emeka. He was ecstatic when he heard the news, but did his best to keep it cool, after all, who wants to be the rebound? Well, they continued to hangout, but things started to change. Conversations went on longer, Elizabeth began to stare more intently into Emeka’s eyes, and in her defense, he didn’t dare look away. To summarize the rest, they were lucky enough to both find residency positions in Chicago. In February 2018, they were engaged. Following residency, he pursued a fellowship in cardiology and she in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery/pelvic pain. Unfortunately, Elizabeth’s fellowship took her to Phoenix, AZ for two years, which is Emeka’s new favorite winter getaway. They are doubly excited for Summer 2020 as they celebrate their commitment to each other with you, but it will also mark the ending of fellowship and the opportunity to live in the same city again.
