Edward was on Spring Break and staying at Dr. Nelson's house (his mentor) in Tishomingo, we met half-way in McAlester at Pete's Place. In retrospect, it was the only time I ever saw him nervous. He says it was because of the private room and starkly-painted walls (but we both know the truth). We went to Braum's for ice cream and then bowling where I let him win-twice. He was cutely competitive and showed off his silly dance moves. Our date went so well that we met in Tishomingo again before the end of Spring Break. He said he would 'wine and dine me' so he stopped at Sooner's Grocery and bought Welch's grape juice and some daisies; which happen to be my favorite flower. He proceeded to cull some of the flowers into the trash can and gave me a sly look. He told me the others weren't good enough and only picked out one stem he liked the most to give to me. I should have known then what a sweet cheeky man he is!
He had been hinting in different ways for a while so I knew he might propose soon. He liked dropping his chap stick, tying his shoes, or stretching; any reason he could use to slowly bend to one knee. He said it was to throw me off when it would actually happen, so it would be a surprise. On Memorial Day he took me to the Dallas Arboretum. During the entire walk through the park he told me reasons why he loves me and what made him know that he wanted to marry me. We stopped in the iconic crapemyrtle allee and he fumbled in his pocket. I got excited, was it happening? But, no, out popped the chap stick! We stood there for a while, he said he wanted to wait for a good picture with fewer people. I thought again, "he could really be going to ask today." But, when more brides and quinceanera girls lined up with their photographers, he got flustered and we kept walking. It was really hot and he was sweating, so we found a shady spot under an old oak tree. He sat down on a low branch and immediately fell backwards onto the ground. He and I were both laughing and when I helped pull him up, he seamlessly rolled onto his knee with the ring in his hand and blurted out, "Will you marry me?" I was so confused by the whole thing and thought it was his chap stick again. I repeated a few times "for real...what... really?..."YES!"
