After talking for a while through eharmony, we "officially" met at one of Brenna's favorite restaurants. A little nervous, Doug almost turned around before our first date, but he's very happy he didn't! After sharing some easy, fun conversation over Brenna's crab cakes, we parted ways and planned to meet up again for bowling the next week. We had no idea at the time that a few years later, we'd be reflecting on this day as an engaged couple!
Doug took me to the Forty Steps on the Cliffwalk in Newport, Rhode Island for a "spur of the moment" afternoon getaway. Rhode Island has always been one of my favorite places, and the Cliffwalk in Newport was one of the first destinations we visited together, when three years earlier, I brought Doug for his first time. Like the first time we did the Cliffwalk and the Forty Steps, it was cold and windy out. Like I usually do when we are walking together, I kept putting my hands in Doug's pockets because my hands were cold. This time though, with the ring in his pocket, Doug says that he had to do some very "creative walking" to avoid ruining the surprise. When we finished our walk along the cliffs, we walked down the Forty Steps to watch the sunset. The next thing I knew, Doug was down on one knee, proposing to me in front of a small crowd. He totally achieved the level of surprise he had hoped for! Needless to say, he got a big "YES", and we got an applause from happy onlookers- so grateful for the kind stranger who captured that moment for us with great pictures! We couldn't be happier and can't wait to celebrate with our loved ones!
