Our Story

Diamonds Are Forever

On Diamond's first day at Taylor & Francis, she saw a bright ball of red curls over a cubicle wall and got a feeling. Matt couldn't help peeking over the top of the cubicle to see the beautiful new hire. The two got to know each other over a happy accident — Matt started receiving emails for a journal Diamond was supposed to cover while their supervisor was out of town. They got to talking and quickly realized they made each other laugh more than anyone else could. Matt sealed the deal by sharing a chocolate bar earned for his time spent on a new office initiative. After many late nights chatting in the office after work and walking to the bus stop together, Diamond finally worked up the nerve to ask for his number — to which Matt very smoothly replied, "My bus number? It's the 47," as the bus approached. The SEPTA driver was not too happy to have to wait for Matt to realize his mistake and provide his phone number, advising him as the bus barreled up the street, "Hey Romeo, next time get her number BEFORE the bus arrives." The two began texting constantly, and after an office happy hour one night, Matt agreed to walk Diamond to the subway (a few blocks away). Instead, they spent hours walking for miles around the city together, stopping in old bookshops, window shopping in Old City, and enjoying the view from the Walnut Street bridge along the way. They traveled from 2nd and Chestnut streets all the way to Diamond's home near 37th and Market, where Matt finally asked her out for their first date. On March 16, 2017, Matt and Diamond had their first date at Jones Restaurant on 7th and Chestnut streets, a few short blocks from the office. They were so caught up in conversation, they closed down the restaurant four hours after the start of their reservation. The wait staff didn't have the heart to interrupt them! Afterward, Matt definitely leaned in to initiate their first kiss, no matter what Diamond tries to tell you. After 5 incredible years and moving in together DURING a global pandemic, Matt knew they were more than ready to take the next step. He designed the perfect ring for Diamond (it helps when your girlfriend points out all the things she likes in an engagement ring whenever you walk down Jeweler's Row) and planned the proposal. On March 16, 2022, the fifth anniversary of their first date, Matt took her on a daylong adventure — brunch in Fishtown, an interactive art gallery in the museum district, and an afternoon at Schuylkill Banks — before taking her to their favorite picnic spot, the Belmont Plateau, at sunset. Here, he nervously pulled her up from their picnic blanket and popped the question. Of course, she said yes! As the two of us take the next step in our lives together, we're so excited to celebrate our union with all of you! We can't wait to see you there!
