Detroit Recs

The Wedding Website of Cara DiJulio and Jake Sweeney-Samuelson
We'd highly suggest suspending that diet you might be on when visiting Detroit. If you aren't planning on eating a bunch of Detroit style pizza and drinking a lot of Michigan beer - why are you even coming!? For us?

Grandma Bob’s Pizza

2135 Michigan Avenue, Detroit, MI 48216
, (313) 315-3177

Never had Detroit style pizza? You're missing out. Go to Grandma Bobs for a hip atmosphere, boozy milkshakes, and some really fantastic pizza. By the end of this weekend you too will be talking about where to find Brick Cheese.

The OG Buddy's Pizza

17125 Conant St, Detroit, MI 48212

Maybe you want really good pizza but aren't feeling that hip, Buddy's is the place for you. Plastic checkered tablecloths, dark wood and dim lighting with a bar in the back that looks like it got caught in a time warp, you'll feel like a local here. There's a lot of Buddy's locations, but those in the know suggest the first location on Conant St.

Mudgie's Deli and Wine Shop

1413 Brooklyn Street, Detroit, MI 48226

Do you need a sandwich fix? This is THE. SPOT. That's really all we have to say....

New York Bagel

23316 Woodward Avenue, Ferndale, MI 48220
, (248) 548-2580

For our New Yorker friends and other bagel lovers we really like New York bagel. They even have Bialys. Their bagels run on the small size, which is the perfect size in my opinion. We'd suggest their scallion cream cheese on an everything toasted - but you really can't go wrong here.

Collect Beer Bar

1454 Gratiot Avenue, Detroit, MI 48207

If you're looking for a wide selection of interesting beers in a sunny and well-designed location, we'd suggest Collect. Neither of us have figured out how to pronounce the name of the street its on, but its delightful nonetheless. This little spot has a lot of white tile and light wood, and very friendly bartenders.

Detroit River Front

If you need to walk off all of that pizza and beer you just had, the Detroit Riverfront has a lovely boardwalk to stroll along - and hey, go take a glance at Canada! We'd also suggest the Dequindre Cut as a nice walking and biking path through the city.

Jolly Pumpkin Brewery & Motor City Brewing Works

441 West Canfield Street, Detroit, MI 48201
, (313) 262-6115

These two pizza and beer bars are right across the street from each other. They both have wide selections and pretty good food! Their pizza is good, but if you arent trying to eat pizza for every single meal - save your pizza consumption for the aforementioned detroit style.

Detroit Institute of Arts

5200 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48202

A world-class art museum lives in midtown Detroit with a collection of over 65,000 works. Excellent curated shows and a diverse permanent collection await at DIA if you have extra time during your visit. Don't miss the central courtyard, where you are surrounded by Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry fresco cycle.

Motown Museum

2648 West Grand Boulevard, Detroit, MI 48208

Hitsville, USA. Not much more to say. If you want to walk the hallowed grounds of Studio A and imagine Stevie at the piano laying down iconic tracks, the Motown Museum's hour-long guided tour can make it happen.

Green Dot Stables

2200 West Lafayette Boulevard, Detroit, MI 48216

Stolen directly from The Infatuation, because I couldn't say it better myself: "Combine a gourmet version of White Castle with your favorite horse-themed dive bar and you get Green Dot Stables. This downtown tavern serves more than 20 types of sliders, including a Cuban, gyro, and a daily “mystery meat,” which could be anything from fried lobster to cauliflower. It’s a casual spot to eat some tiny burgers, have a few $3 drinks, and be glad that the bar you imagined your grandpa secretly placed race bets at still exists."

Eastern Market

Detroit, MI

A thriving public market, the perfect walkable Saturday morning option. From their website: "Attending our Saturday Market is an experience that is undeniably Detroit. Over 225 market vendors share their produce and stories with up to 40,000 visitors in one day during our busy season. The tradition of this market has been a cornerstone of the city for 125 years and is crucial to our mission of nourishing a healthier, wealthier, and happier city. "
