As a Mastercard scholar, Derrick was thrilled to meet the next batch of students sponsored by the Mastercard program during the 2018 academic year. Love happened to be part of these new students. Surprisingly, Derrick recounts receiving a cold welcome from Love when they first met on the Arizona State University campus.   Fast-forward, attending the same church, staying in the same dorm, and pursuing the same major made them close friends. Love recalls when Derrick would pass by her room for cooking tips and recipes. When Love completed university, Derrick referred her to his company after several failed attempts to secure a job due to the Covid-19 pandemic. They ended up working for the same company in Arizona. Seeing each other almost every day, coupled with Love’s care, kindness, and thoughtful heart, Derrick decided to get to know her better. Derrick spent most of his time at Love’s apartment after work, engaging in deep conversations. Derrick was intrigued by Love’s answers, vision, values, and aspirations. They started going on dates and visiting new places. Derrick was scared to ask Love out because he did not want to lose their friendship should she say NO to him. After praying about it and talking to some friends, Derrick could no longer contain it. He mastered courage and took that bold step. The rest, they say, is history. Derrick and Love decided to embark on a love journey. The journey which is yet to begin.
