Derek and Harmony grew up in neighboring towns, attending the same schools, gym, and church for many years of their lives. This meant they were familiar with one another; however, they did not really run in the same circles throughout this time. The two remained connected through social media and later struck up conversations that led to friendship. Friendship turned to affection, affection became love, and the rest is history!
Derek was visiting Harmony in Allendale for Easter weekend. At this point in time, they had already shared a few meals together, but Derek had emphasized that they were only “hanging out” on these occasions. On the first afternoon of his visit (Good Friday), Derek asked Harmony if she would join him for an official date the following evening, and Harmony happily agreed. Derek was staying in Harmony’s dorm with her, and they had spent the whole Saturday studying together, but he initiated the date that evening by sneaking out the front door and knocking on it. When Harmony answered the door, he grinned and said, “Wow, you look beautiful! Are you ready for our date?” They both laughed at this playful display and off they went to Applebee’s.
On an uncharacteristically sunny and warm spring afternoon, Derek and Harmony took a hike through Kingsley Loop in North Street, Michigan. The trail had not been well-maintained, so the two made their own path, taking in all of the untouched beauty. As they were making their way back, they crossed a gorgeous waterfall. The two stopped to admire the picturesque scene, when Derek began reminiscing on how far the two had come. He recalled all of the adventures they had enjoyed and how much they had grown together through the trials and tribulations of life. He said that from the first day they had spent together, he knew the connection they shared was something special he did not want to lose. Then, getting down on one knee, he told her, “Now I know I can’t imagine spending a day of my life without you… Will you marry me?” Harmony had thought often about the possibility of an engagement and never thought she would cry because she was generally prepared for that natural next step in the progression of their relationship. But the waterworks followed soon after she said yes!
