Our Story

Day One

We met on the very first day of college at our 8am English 1102 class freshman year in August 2019. Brooke's Perspective: Because it was the first day of school and we were nervous freshmen and it was simply 7:50am in the morning, no one was talking in my 8am english class... except for this one guy sitting right in front of me. He had fluffy hair, chaco sandles, bright eyes, a shirt that read, "Camp Life," and simply would not stop talking. I was sitting quietly, probably on my phone or just observing the classroom, when he turned around introduced himself as Jacob. I was so amazed with his ability to talk so freely and openly with people, as I tend to be more quiet and reserved. It seemed as though we clicked instantly and started to become friends. Every class (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays), I would always sit behind him and look forward for the chance to talk to him again and again and again. I was instantly drawn to his lively and joyful nature, his infectious laugh and smile, his ability to make people feel seen, his looks (obviously), his kindness and compassion, and so much more. My sorority's very first date night was coming up on September 9th, and I needed to find a date. I'm not necessarily one to put myself out there when it comes to dating and boys, but I really wanted to ask Jacob. We had become better friends through texting and talking in class, and I definitely wanted to pursue something (like being more-than-friends) with him. It took me over a week to work up the courage to ask him to be my date for my sorority's date night. Luckily, he said yes, and we had the best time. While we knew that we wanted to date, we still did not really know each other that much. So, we became "exclusive friends" where we got to know each other more intimately with the hopes or goal of dating. Shortly after, we started dating on October 1st, 2019! And the rest is history! Jacob's Perspective: I was so excited for the first day of college; I had imagined that first day, waking up in a dorm, eating at a dining hall, then walking to my class so many times I couldn’t believe the day was truly here. I get to class, and the first thing I notice is this absolutely gorgeous girl sitting behind me. I had to say something to her, especially since she wasn’t saying anything to me. I don’t remember exactly what I said, but I found some excuse to turn around and talk with her. I don’t remember what we talked about either, but two days later, I saw her in a dining hall at the cereal bar. I thought “This is my chance!”. She walked up to me and said “Hey Jacob”- and that's when I panicked. I realized I had forgotten her name. Summoning all the wits I had, I remembered that our small class of twentyish students had three students named Hayden. I quickly responded “Hey! It’s Hayden right?”, knowing full well that it wasn’t. She responded in a disappointed tone “No. It’s Brooke”. That’s when I hit her with a brilliant stroke of ingenuity, showcasing my intelligence and humor; “Well, statistically speaking, Hayden was my best guess.” Brooke was not amused. However, from that moment on we (luckily) spent more and more time together, as we continued to get to know each other. Two months later, on October 1st, I asked Brooke to date me. And in the very same spot three years later, I asked Brooke to marry me.
