The boardwalk is 2.5 miles long, go for a walk & enjoy the beach. There are lots of stores/restaurants along the boardwalk, many stay open in the off season! You can enter the boardwalk right from The Flanders.
Asbury Ave has a ton of fun local shops and restaurants, just a few blocks from The Flanders
The Flanders was built in 1923 in hopes of expanding tourism @ the Jersey Shore & named in memory of fallen troops of WWI's Battle of Flanders fought in Belgium 1914. During Prohibition The Flanders basement, The Catacombs, served as a meeting spot for organized crime bosses (think Boardwalk Empire). They were fully underground meeting rooms where they could drive their cars inconspicuously into. They also served as speakeasies! Unfortunately, the catacombs were hit with 55" of water during Sandy in 2012 and are not in operation. As with any grand old place with a long history, the Flanders has its own resident ghost. She's known as the Lady in White, her name Emily. She's thought to be the spirit of a young woman in her 20's, who wanders the hallways of the hotel. According to most eyewitnesses, Emily is a cheerful gal who appears & disappears into walls & mischievously plays with locks. Ghost tours say that Emily was the girlfriend of a WWI soldier who never returned from Europe.
