Less than 20 minutes from Rush Creek Lodge are two lesser-known gems. Just inside the Big Oak Flat Entrance, the Tuolumne and Merced Groves are found. Both groves are an approximate one-half-mile hike from the road, and it is here you will find the first man-made Tunnel Tree in Yosemite National Park, carved in 1878. It's the smallest of Yosemite's three Giant Sequoia groves, with only about twenty of these venerable creatures, but it's also the least crowded. Like the Tuolumne Grove, it's downhill all the way to the grove. Apx 14 minutes from Rush Creek.
"Hetch Hetchy Valley is a treasure worth visiting in all seasons. In spring, two of North America’s tallest waterfalls plummet spectacularly over thousand-foot granite cliffs. With its towering falls and dramatic domes, many have compared Hetch Hetchy’s grandeur to the more well-known Yosemite Valley." A park reservation is not necessary to visit Hetch Hetchy Take CA Highway 120 from the park toward Groveland. From the main road, it's about a 20- to 25-minute drive to the parking area. The half-hour drive to Hetch Hetchy from CA Highway 120 begins outside the park boundaries.
