Varun and I both had journeys that led us to Waco, TX for our training as physicians in family medicine. We didn’t really get a chance to know each other until the latter part of residency. Varun had friends close by and usually kept to himself and it's not often you are around residents in your year unless you are scheduled to work together on a rotation. It was not until our last year of residency that we were assigned to work in the same hospital at the same time. Varun was working pediatrics and I was working the adult wards, and as a result, it had us spending quite a bit of time in the common lounge together. With that time, we got to know more about one another and realized we had a lot in common. We lived in the same apartment complex: Varun will tell you that he saw me come home from work one evening looking worn out and lonely, so he texted to see if I wanted to grab a drink. After that first date it was game over. We spent all of our free time together, bonding over things like Harry Potter and reggaeton/hip hop music. Just weeks after we started dating, COVID-19 became serious and we ended up quarantining together. It wasn’t long until we realized that this was something special. The plans we initially had after residency would have taken us to different states, but those plans were quickly changed and we found ourselves together in Austin, TX. Varun is now working in urgent care while obtaining his executive MBA in healthcare administration, and I am working as a primary care physician. We are excited for what the coming years will bring us!
