We were both philosophy majors at UCSC and had been introduced in history of the ancient Greeks but that wasn’t anything special. Nick loves Miley Cyrus and saw her in Oakland with one of his fraternity brothers and two of my sorority sisters. I was also friends with my next door neighbors who were in Nick’s fraternity. My sorority sister wanted to give Nick money for gas from going to the concert and was going to give it to my next door neighbor. I had seen a picture on Instagram of the newly elected Teke officers and recognized that Nick was in my class so I offered to deliver the money for her. I went up to Nick in our Philosophy of Race class and shoved $20 in his face. During our finals I was running late and didn’t catch my usual bus. Instead I got on the bus that went past Nick’s house. When we got to campus and passed Science Hill and the bus emptied out I realized he was sitting in front of me. I asked him how his final for our class was coming along and what classes he was taking the following quarter. We figured out we had both signed up for Intermediate Logic. We sat next to each other during that class and the teacher straight up said the this class was nothing like intro to logic. Nick dropped and slid into my insta DMs to let me know. I told him he had to invite me to something fun to make it up to me. Nick invited me to a party that I was already planning on going to since I knew others in his fraternity. I made it my mission to seek out Nick that night. After that I would go over to his house to watch Game of Thrones and basically became the house’s fifth roommate. And the rest is history.
Nick bought the ring early 2020 and planned to propose summer of 2020. Pandemic hit and I didn’t leave the house. Finally towards the end of the year we started slowly going out more, looking for a house, and he didn’t want to wait anymore. There was two weeks of good weather in the forecast so he planned it out. I also had asked him to take me on a date and this was already in the works. Nick made an itinerary for the day. First up was mini golf! We pulled up to my best friend’s house to a private sushi chef lunch. Afterwards I was ready to relax but Nick insisited on dessert as he had everything timed out perfectly. We drove an hour south and that’s when I knew what was happening as I had told Nick before Panther Beach would be a great spot to propose. When we arrived at Marianne’s for ice cream we were both full so I asked to go to our next destination. To stall Nick stopped at Starbucks to go to the bathroom (it was closed) and get coffee. As we drove down Highway 1 it was really overcast but as we pulled into the parking lot the skies opened up. I tried to be slick and give Nick a pat down disgused as a hug and didn’t find anything. I asked Nick why his heart was pounding so hard and he blamed it on the coffee. As we walked toward the cliff Nick stepped aside to go to the bathroom and I went to look at the beach. I could read upside down in the sand “Crystal will you marry me?” and my eyes widend (thank you masks). Nick noticed and I said it was nothing. When we got to the end of the path Nick asked me if I knew what was going on and I said yes. We laughed because of the reason why. When Nick got down on his knee I couldn’t see the ring as tears filled my eyes. Then out pops Jordan who was taking our pictures the whole time. Then Estephan and Melissa start waving from the beach as they were standing guard in the sand. Lastly my mom and sister join us on the cliff to take pictures before heading home to meet up with Nick’s parents for pizza, cake, and toasts.
