Essex Steam Train & Riverboat
As the name implies, the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat offers several ways to explore this charming town via multiple methods. What you may not know, though, is this business offers visitors a third way to explore the area – a rail bike in Connecticut. A pedal-powered wheeled device, a rail bike rides along unused train tracks (similar to the rail trails in Connecticut, except these are used for bikes instead of hikes). Rail biking in Connecticut is an absolute blast and a great way to see the state like you’ve never seen it before! The Essex Steam Train is now offering the chance to pedal a Rail-Bike for a 75 minute, 6 mile round trip adventure over easy terrain starting from The Haddam Meadows State Park located on Rt. 154 in Haddam with their Essex Steam Train Rail-Bike Adventures.
Gillette Castle State Park
Hidden away in the hills of Connecticut is this fascinating home, designed and created by famous stage actor William Gillette, who was famous for playing Sherlock Holmes for decades. The castle is perched right over the river, so the views are gorgeous. The house is now part of a state park, and one must book a tour to go inside, but the experience should not be missed! First, the "castle" looks almost like a forbidding fortress, and it appears quite indestructible, as it is built of steel, stone, wood and cement. Inside, though, is a cozy and comfortable home, beloved by its creator, full of nooks and crannies, secret doors, complex wood locks, lovely Tiffany glass lights, and other unique features. The owner also had seventeen pet cats at one point! It is very fun to tour and explore this architectural masterpiece, and see how imagination can become reality.
Devil's Hopyard State Park
Devil's Hopyard State Park is a public recreation area located at the Eightmile River's Chapman Falls in the town of East Haddam, Connecticut. The 1,000-acre state park includes facilities for hiking, fishing, bicycling, picnicking, and camping.
