Our suggestions for flights, travel, and accommodations for our friends and family!

Flight

British Airways

When we fly to Scotland, we fly British Airways and the closest airport to our venue is Edinburgh Airport. Here are our tips and tricks for flights: First make sure your passport is up to date! The passport process can take quite a while here in the United States so it may be good to start this sooner rather than later if your passport will be out of date by the time of the wedding! British Airways has surge pricing depending on the day you decide to fly - we would suggest avoiding Saturdays and Sundays if you can! The flight across the pond is a red-eye, overnight flight. From the United States to Scotland it is almost a full 24 hours of travel so be prepared to be tired when you land overseas (also there is a 6-hour time difference). For international travel, make sure to get to the airport in plenty of time to make it through security lines (airlines will tell you the amount of time you will need / be required to arrive by when you book your flight or on their website). If you can, we suggest getting qualified for Global Entry. It also comes with TSA Pre-Check and makes re-entering the United States upon return so much easier (you bypass having to go through long customs lines). The process to get Global Entry can be very lengthy so we suggest starting this process as soon as possible if desired. Lastly, the return flight from Scotland to the United States is a very early morning flight. There is a Hilton hotel at the Edinburgh Airport that we usually stay in the night before our flight just to make things easier so this may be a good option when it comes to traveling home!

Travel Note

Accommodation

When we travel to Scotland we usually stay in an Airbnb. Scotland has lots of good Airbnb options. Staying in St Andrews can be pricey so make sure to check nearby towns as well - for reference, we look for Airbnb properties in Dundee, Broughty Ferry, or Fife (all roughly 30 minutes from St Andrews). If looking for an Airbnb, we suggest making sure it has free parking on premise (try avoid street parking) and a dryer. Not all Scottish properties come with these automatically!

Travel Note

Driving / Car Rental

When we travel to Scotland we primarily use Avis as our car rental company. One important thing to remember for our American friends and family is that when you land you will be driving on the opposite side of the car than what you are used to and the opposite side of the road as well! When reserving a rental car remember that Scotland is much smaller than the United States so the car sizing will also be smaller (which may affect space for luggage). Also, cars in Scotland are not all automatics, some are stick shift / manual - make sure to double check your car reservation! For larger parties with lots of luggage, Avis has a special service called Avis Prestige where you can rent a small van to fit all passengers and luggage. This may be helpful!

Travel Note

Zero Tolerance Policy

Scotland is different than the United States in that there is a zero tolerance policy when it comes to drinking alcohol and driving. Keep that in mind for night plans and also even more so for the wedding - our suggestion would be to possibly get a room at our venue (Old Course Hotel) or to make sure to have a designated driver for your party. Local taxis are also a possibility but availability may be limited - it is not always a guarantee!
