Carson National Forest is located outside of Taos, New Mexico and encompasses parts of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Gorge Bridge. This forest has many recreational opportunities such as fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, and camping. It is also home to Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in the state of New Mexico.
The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge sits 650 feet above the Rio Grande River and is the 10th highest bridge in the United States. This bridge is only 19 miles Southwest of the retreat and offers breathtaking views of the river, mesa, and mountains.
Taos Pueblo is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States. Current schedules are posted online including current events, tours, ceremonies, and cultural etiquette.
Taos Plaza is part of a historic district including the surrounding abode buildings and churches. The Plaza area is filled with restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries, and other local shops! Check their website for events such as the farmers market and live music.
The Taos Art Museum is located at the former house of Russian painter Nicolai Fechin. It offers some of his personal work, a tour of his studio, and guest exhibits.
