Although the origins are disputed, Pittsburghers uphold a unique tradition of wedding guests pitching together to bake cookies for their reception. Some cite the frugality of the Great Depression, while others believe it's rooted in Pittsburgh's prominent Eastern European immigrant heritage.

In Pittsburgh, wedding guests bake family recipes or new favorites to share at the reception. Dedicated bakers typically prepare and freeze a variety of cookies months in advance, and then bake them off just before the wedding. Wedding guests box up their favorite cookies as they leave the reception.
