How We Met

In August 2015

KELLY: We met during my first week of work at Reynolds. I was asked to sub on Matt’s sand volleyball team. I was told to go out on the court and look for the guy with curly hair. I didn’t know then, but that would be the first of roughly one million sand volleyball games we would play together. After the game, we shared some drinks and chatted. Matt made me laugh a ton and I will admit to having an instant crush on him. I may have creeped on his Facebook when I got home that night! Through work, mutual friends, and sports leagues, Matt and I found ourselves spending a lot of time together. We quickly realized we had a lot in common. We both liked the Bengals, Reds, and Buckeyes and loved going to games together. We even figured out that we went to the same high school, but didn’t really know each other then. Before we knew it, we were inseparable - constantly buying tickets to games and concerts, signing up for volleyball tournaments, and planning weekend trips. We've also traveled a ton over the past few years: from Cozumel to Cabo, Vegas to San Diego, Key West to the Bahamas - just to name a few of our favorites! Fast forward a year or two, and we decided to adopt the cutest, most rotten German Shepherd of all time. Our sweet Hayes brings us so much happiness and we love going on adventures with her. Our biggest adventure was buying our first home! We have already built so many wonderful memories here: hosting Buckeye games in our basement, playing yard games in the backyard, family cookouts, and more!

The Proposal

2.27.20 | Miami, FL

MATT: Kelly and I were set to embark on a three day cruise to the Bahamas with roughly 30 of our closest friends, but before the boat festivities could commence, we planned to spend the day prior in Miami. The plan was simple; propose in Miami before we get on the cruise, so I would no longer be responsible for the expensive piece of jewelry and we could spend the next three days celebrating. Well as it turned out, the plan was so simple that you could barely call it a plan at all. All I knew was that I was going to propose in front of our friends at some point in Miami. "When? Where? How?" In hindsight, these questions warranted consideration. Before I knew it, the day was gone in Miami. We found ourselves at Senor Frogs having already eaten dinner and well on our way to getting our money's worth from the "unlimited drinks" bracelet. The group was finally all together and I had to come up with something. I decided I had to get on stage to make this thing worthwhile, but how could I get them to pause the music and give me the microphone? I quickly realized I would need some assistance, as to not give away the surprise, but who would be brazen enough to confront a DJ and convince him to turn the floor over to yours truly? Nick Humanic. That's who. My cousin was the only one among us with enough shameless confidence to pull it off (after all, "it's Buddy, b*tch"). After a quick men's bathroom debriefing, the plan was set in motion, and Nick pulled it off flawlessly. He convinced the DJ to announce it was my birthday and to call me up on stage. I bashfully approached the stage and accepted the microphone as if it was chore. I deflected the attention and instead chose to praise Kelly for planning such an incredible trip. I called her to the stage, got on one knee, and slurred some sequence of words that resembled "will you marry me?" She said "yes!" The party that ensued was one that will only be matched by the festivities on 9/17/2021.
