According to local lore, the house's name changed from Pleasant Green to Contention when its owner bequeathed the place to the first of his nephews who took possession at the time of his demise. The two litigants hastened to their respective legal advisers, one to Thomas Jefferson (a cousin) at Monticello, and the other to Chief Justice John Marshall in Richmond, both of whom allegedly agreed that, possession being 9/10ths of the law, the one who took possession first would get the house. Hence the name “Contention,” as the house and property were the bone of contention in the will. While that legend cannot be verified, James Pleasants Sr. was born at Contention in 1730, marrying Anne Randolph, in 1761. Their son James Pleasants was born at Contention in 1769 and served in Congress before being elected Governor of Virginia from 1822 to 1825. He is buried in the old family cemetery in the front field.
