The province of Soria is characterized by beautiful nature reserves, mountains, rivers and lakes, and is also famed for its architectural heritage and religious monuments. The city itself is small and very walkable, but you may need a car if you want to visit some of the surroundings. Here are some recommendations to do in and around Soria, as well as around Madrid.

Sightseeing in Soria

City Center – Walk along the pedestrian street El Collado, with many stores, bars and restaurants, until Plaza Mayor, where the city hall is located and one of Soria’s main churches, Iglesia de la Mayor. Shrine of San Saturio - It is located above a grotto on the banks of the Duero river, in a landscape of outstanding beauty. Inside, it contains frescos that narrate the life of San Saturio. It also houses the tomb of the saint. The shrine is located on what is known as the Machado Route. Monasterio de San Juan de Duero - A significant example of Romanesque architecture. From the 12th century it belonged to the Knights Hospitaller of Jerusalem, until it was abandoned in the 18th century. The 12th century church and the 13th cloister, with Gothic and Mudéjar elements, are still standing. Parque de la Alameda de Cervantes – Main park in the city and one of the oldest in Spain (12th century). It has a little chapel, a rose garden, playground and a green field.

What to see around Soria (Day trips)

Cañon del Rio Lobos Natural Park, in San Leonardo de Yagüe. Perfect for a full day of hiking 44 min drive from Soria (56 km) Laguna Negra, in Vinuesa. One of the most beautiful places in the province and it does not require much walking to see the lagoon 57 min drive (52 km) Castroviejo (Duruelo de la Sierra). A hilltop with curious rocky formations and spectacular views 57 min drive (60km) Numancia. Ruins of an ancient city that back to the 3rd century BC and is set atop a hill. Defensive walls, streets, houses, thermal baths, wells, cisterns and columns give clues as to what life was like there, and part of it has been painstakingly reconstructed. 11 min drive (10km)

What to see around Madrid (Day trips)

Segovia - One of the most popular day trips from Madrid. A historical town and UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for an imposing Roman aqueduct, an impressive Alcazar and a culturally significant old town center. It is the perfect destination for lovers of history and castles especially but it is also a very pleasant city for a stroll. 1h 8min drive (92km). 30 min train ride. Toledo - It is one of Spain’s most interesting and intriguing cities, where you can see a Gothic cathedral, a 10th century mosque and two synagogues in the space of just a few meters. Make sure to see its views, visit the Alcázar, walk around its winding streets, or see a sunset from the Alcántara or San Martín bridges. 55min drive (72km). 30 min train ride. El Escorial - The Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with secrets from the history of Spain hidden inside. Also, the town itself is charming, and surrounded by beautiful scenery. 44min drive (46km). 1h 6min train ride.

If you want to extend your stay in Spain

Going South of Spain – Seville – Cordoba – Granada – Malaga You can travel to all these cities by high-speed train from Madrid Going North of Madrid – Bilbao – San Sebastian You will need to drive or fly from Madrid. Soria (where the wedding is) is located in between Madrid and Bilbao/ San Sebastian so if you decide to drive, you will be halfway there. Going East of Madrid – Barcelona – Valencia You can take high speed train from Madrid to Barcelona or Valencia, or fly. Going West of Madrid – Portugal – Lisbon or Porto You should drive or fly to Portugal
