A few of our favorite outdoor activities and eats in the Bay Area.
Cataract Falls Trail
Cataract Trail, Stinson Beach, CA 94970, (916) 653-6995
Scenic hike with a waterfall that is not for the faint of heart. If you make it to Ridgecrest Blvd (intersects with Laurel Dell Road), you'll be treated to a spectacular ocean view of Bolinas and Drakes Bay.
Octavia
1701 Octavia Street, San Francisco, CA 94109, (415) 408-7507
California farm-to-table favorite within walking distance of the hotels.
Muir Woods National Monument
Mill Valley, CA 94941, (415) 561-2850
Old-growth redwood trees along Redwood Creek - local shuttles leave from Sausalito, or hotels can arrange transportation. No cell service at Muir Woods.
Gray Whale Cove Trail & Beach
Pacific Coast Highway, Pacifica, CA 94044
Best-kept secret beach in SF with plenty of surrounding trails off of Old San Pedro Mountain. Humpback and Gray Whales can be seen on their migration to Mexico. The water here is quite sharky.
Bernal Heights
San Francisco, CA 94110
Good spot to enjoy a sunrise, sunset, or anything in between. Dogs abound.
Cinderella Bakery & Cafe
436 Balboa Street, San Francisco, CA 94118, (415) 751-9690
Excellent Russian bakery just north of Golden Gate Park in Richmond District. Nod to Sam Sperling for this find.
Rodeo Beach - Coastal Trail
Coastal Trail, Sausalito, CA 94965
Family-friendly hike with the option to extend to Point Bonita or the Nike Missile Site. Turn right on McCullough Road on the way back for a great view of the Golden Gate.
Sai’s Vietnamese Restaurant
505 Washington Street, San Francisco, CA 94111, (415) 362-3689
Pretty darn good Vietnamese food in a funky restaurant just east of the Transamerica Pyramid.
Palomarin Trail - Bolinas
Bolinas, CA 94924, (415) 464-5137
Long out-and-back trail with access to swimming at Bass Lake and Wildcat Beach. Take a chilly dip at Bolinas Beach afterwards to wash the dust off.
Kayaking w/ Sea Otters at Elkhorn Slough
Well worth the full-day trip - plenty of sea otters, harbor seals and other marine life to see up close from your kayak.
