Our Story

The Red String is Real!

The "Red String Theory" is a belief originating from East Asian mythology that states people destined to be together are connected by an invisible red string, meaning that no matter the distance or circumstances, they will eventually meet each other. The string may stretch or tangle but never break, symbolizing a strong, fated connection between two individuals. Cameron and Irwin's first "non-meeting" occurred in the spring of 2009 when they both went on a church-sponsored spring break college tour trip. They were both invited by friends who were members of the church hosting the event. On this trip, the two rode the same charter bus to New York, stayed in the same hotels, and rode the same ferry while viewing the Statue of Liberty. No introductions were made, nor smiles shared, during this first crossing of paths. The two would not realize they had both been on the trip until they were well into dating and reminiscing about past spring breaks. Both clearly remembered being on a college tour in New York when one of their peers "purchased an iPod" on Canal Street. Everyone on that trip had a good laugh once it was revealed that the purchase was an empty iPod box with an apple core inside. Winston-Salem State University was the setting of the couple's next "meeting." Irwin and his friends had signed up for a dodgeball competition. Cameron and her friends had decided to walk the yard to see what adventures they could find, and they stumbled upon a dodgeball game. When it was time for Irwin's team to play, it was determined that the team was one player short. The team asked the crowd if anyone would like to join. Cameron volunteered as tribute, was the last player standing, and won the game. After a brief celebration of the win, Cameron and her friends left to look for the next adventure. Cameron was unaware this was a tournament, so her absence resulted in Irwin's team having to forfeit... he never lets her forget it. Cameron and Irwin would cross paths several times during freshman year, each situation more random and comical than the last. They finally had a formal introduction to each other toward the end of sophomore year. What began as Irwin and Cameron hanging out in the same social circles turned into a meaningful friendship where they supported each other through the highs and lows. That friendship is deeply rooted in their relationship and is the most invaluable piece of their connection. In time, the red string no longer had to worry about being stretched or tangled, as the two have become inseparable. The remaining distance of the red string will come to a close once Cameron meets Irwin down the aisle on Friday, September 5th, 2025.
