It was the summer of 2018 and Weston had just finished his 1st year at the Naval Academy and was assigned to the John P Murtha, LPD 26 out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for his youngster cruise. Caitlyn was home for the summer staying with her parents and was convinced that this summer would be like any other. However, after a mutual friend invited Weston and a few fellow Midshipman to a Fourth of July BBQ hosted by the Dodges, Caitlyn and Weston’s paths would cross after they were paired up for the annual water balloon toss. For the next several days, Weston and a few of his Naval Academy friends were carted around the beautiful island by Caitlyn and her sister, getting the true local experience and having the vacation of a lifetime. However, as all good things do, the dream vacation would come to an end as Weston exchanged his daily hikes through the mountains of Hawaii for long watch schedules underway on the Murtha and Caitlyn went back to her summer job as a lifeguard. While the two were certainly interested, the pair were uncertain where this “summer fling” would take them. Upon Weston’s return to the island, he said an awkward farewell and left the island the next day on to his next summer training assignment. Caitlyn would finish off her summer break in Hawaii and return to Boise State University for the fall semester. Caitlyn and Weston had left each other as friends for the moment, with their future still undecided. But as fate would have it, the couple would find an opportunity to see each other yet again. After staying in touch that fall, Caitlyn and her sister visited their aunt and uncle for Thanksgiving break in Annapolis, conveniently only a short drive from Weston at the Naval Academy. Obviously the two made plans to see each other during their short overlap of time off school and had a blast, this time with Weston as the tour guide! After the visit, Caitlyn and Weston decided to give their relationship an honest shot, knowing the difficulty of starting out as a long distance relationship. As the year 2019 rolled in, Weston and Caitlyn used their few breaks from school and meager budgets to fly to both Idaho and Annapolis, squeezing every bit of time they had with one another before their return to normalcy. As the days rolled into weeks, months and years, their love for each other continued to be greater than any obstacle that came their way. Finally, in the spring of 2022, Weston proposed to Caitlyn on the beaches of Pensacola, FL, making these two water balloon toss champions partners for life!
