Sintra is located in the cooler hills overlooking the beautiful Portuguese coastline, and was a summer escape for the rich and royal during the peak of the powerful Portuguese empire in the 19th century. Its historic fairytale charm has earned recognition as a UNESCO Word Heritage Site. It's a popular day trip/tour from Lisbon so is often buzzing during the day and calm in the mornings and evenings.
Quinta da Penalva is a private estate rented for a handful of celebrations each year. It was previously a getaway for Queen Dona Amélia and King Carlos I, some of the last ruling monarchs before Portugal became a republic. Look out for the old hidden palace walls that snake their way through parts of the property.
