A Funny Thing Happened In A Boston Improv Class

(or, how Charlie's retelling was so long that it exceeded the character limit on Zola)

In 2022 as Charlie got settled in Waltham, MA and COVID ran its course with yet another variant, he wanted to find ways to get out and meet new people. Make new friends! Try new things! Improv happened to be one of those things, so he started looking into improv classes in the area. One theater caught his eye: The Rozzie Square Theater in Roslindale, MA. A woman owned/Asian-American owned comedy theater in Boston with free drop-in sessions and something called ComedySportz?? Sounds like fun! He had a blast in the free drop-in, and decided to take the Level 1 class as well. And that one decision led to this wedding. What a world we live in! The Level 1 class was taught by the powerful and super cool Courtney Pong, co-taught by the hilarious and energetic Zara Barryte. On the third or fourth class, Courtney tapped veteran ComedySportz Boston Laugh-lete Emmy Serviss to come and help teach. As an added bonus, Courtney told her about a funny and attractive member of the class whom Emmy might like to meet and see if there would be a spark of romance? That student’s name was
NOT Charlie Haycook. That’s right, Charlie was NOT the person who Emmy was meant to meet and fall head over heels for. Emmy DID notice Charlie since he was at the class early as usual and thought “Oh he’s cute too, but probably too young. Oh well!” Charlie made the total sensible comedic choice of yelling "ANTS!" at her during a character exercise. Emmy officially met Other Guy and Charlie went home thinking, “Gee what a fun class! That Emmy gal is pretty cute, but she MUST be in a relationship. How could she not be, she seems like the best!” And then came the Level 1 Showcase. The showcase needed a tech person, and Emmy volunteered. Maybe she would even get a chance to see that Other Guy again?! Whilst Other Guy did not perform that night, Charlie did despite having a Very Bad Day. During the showcase, Charlie said SOMETHING that was so funny Emmy let out her signature laugh from the sound booth. (you know the one!) She mentioned to Charlie after the show that he “Did really great!” and “Should keep doing improv,” not realizing that was the moment Charlie would fall head over heels for her! Over the summer, Charlie regularly came to ComedySportz matches, and occasionally DMed Emmy on Instagram about something nerdy, funny, spooky, or witty. It was fun, but the two weren’t having many conversations, so Charlie decided to hatch a devious plan. Not being much of a social media guy, he would post an Instagram story about watching Stephen King’s IT (the 1994 miniseries with Tim Curry, of course). Emmy, being very much a social media person and also a horror queen, would have to comment on it and they would strike up more of a conversation. This genius plan worked! Instagram went to Facebook Messenger and before they knew it, four hours had passed. Charlie tried a couple of times to flirt and dropped some slightly too subtle hints before throwing caution to the wind. As Emmy sent him a picture of her crab tattoo, he sent back the now infamously smooth line: “Cute! And the tattoo’s not bad either!” Emmy and Charlie both panicked and spent 40 minutes trying to figure out if they were indeed “doing a flirt” before landing on YES. A first date was set for Tuesday, October 25th, 2022 for dinner and a scary movie. The following weekend, they made plans to go to dinner after the ComedySportz match. And a couple days later on Halloween, Charlie brought Emmy coffee creamer and they cuddled watching scary movies while waiting for trick-or-treaters. So much has happened since then, from side-splitting laughter to heartbroken tears at losing pets. From frantic calls (which we NEVER do) after cooking incidents or car accidents to quiet moments snuggling in bed. We love our little Bug-a-boo family more than anything in the world, and we’re so glad that you all are here to celebrate our eternal love for each other! With gratitude, Charlie and Emmy
