This is the crown jewel of Marquette, a peninsula with beautiful views of Lake Superior and gentle walks through the woods. "Not to be slept on", in the words of Josh :) There's also a lovely drive through the park if you're not feeling up to walking!
Just seven minutes out of town, Sugarloaf Mountain is an easy hike (mostly stairs) that is still a challenge. We must say, it's worth it for the view. Take our word for it or check it out for yourself!
Lakenenland is an interesting feature of Marquette. A free, 24hr drive through sculpture park is one of the most beloved attractions in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Creator Tom invites you to stop by and see, for yourself, why the Detroit Free Press called Lakenenland , "The coolest unofficial roadside rest stop in the state." His 37 acre park includes a Sculpture Trail, a winding road through the woods featuring more than 100 of Tom's whimsical, colorful and sometimes "tell it like it is" Metal Art sculptures showcasing his tremendous talent for turning junk metal and scrap iron into awe inspiring, entertaining works of art.
This is one of our favorite places to eat! Bodega specializes in fresh, made in-house items (besides gluten-free bread) made with locally-sourced ingredients. Please note that Bodega participates in the "slow-food" movement, so it's not the place to stop in for a quick bite. Josh recommends the pesto grilled cheese while Rebecca is a big fan of the cosmic burrito!
"Probably the best place to eat in town (honestly). New Orleans inspired environment, and an excellent menu."-Josh Ewalt While a little pricey (unless you hit up lunch on Thursday or Friday), the Lagniappe is a fun place located right in the downtown area, and despite being a Cajun restaurant not everything is spicy! Josh enthusiastically recommends the following: the Lagniappe special chef's way: roast beef debris, ham, red-eye gravy, cheddar, bacon, provolone, gorgonzola, on a warm French loaf with lettuce, tomato, and Cajun mayo. Rebecca is a big fan of the seafood bisque.
A perfect park for a sunny summer day. Take a walk by the lakeshore, have a picnic, toss a frisbee, or watch the boats on Lake Superior! The shoreline trail connects Lower Harbor Park all the way to Presque Isle in the north and the town of Harvey in the south. If you take the bike path to the south towards Harvey, you'll happen along a hidden gem known as Drifa Brewing Company. Stop in and enjoy a pint on their patio while taking in views of Lake Superior.
If you're into hiking or mountain biking, this is absolutely worth experiencing! The Noquemanon Trails Network spans from Marquette north to Big Bay. This is a series of 7 trail systems that include over 65 miles (104.6 km) of single track trail, 35 miles (56.3 km) of groomed winter single track, over 77 miles (125 km) of Nordic ski trails and 2 pump tracks. There's a little something for everyone no matter your recreation type for skill-level. Check out more specific trail information on their website.
Dead River Falls is located off of Forestville Road (accessed from Wright Street/County Road 492). Keep on Forestville Road, over the one-lane bridge, for about 2 miles. Stop at the parking area within view of the old power station, near the outhouse. Head up the hill on the wide trail past the stump that says 'Dead River Falls'. Turn left at the trail marker and follow the footpath down to the riverside. The worst part of the trail is just past the tiny creek and up a steep hill. Also, if you want to view the uppermost waterfall, continue past the tall 'bridal veil' plunge, past the deep calm pools that bend the river sharply to the south. [Rebecca would like to note that it can get somewhat treacherous at points beyond, as she once severely rolled an ankle and missed a whole summer of fun as a result.] Total hike from parking area to first falls is less than a mile along well-traveled, but rugged, footpaths.
If you're looking to sample some of the Lagniappe's greatest hits alongside delicious original dishes in an equally ambient environment, look no further! We love to stop in, grab a drink, and enjoy some tasty food at a good price. Josh still enthusiastically recommends the Lagniappe Special-chef's way or their Memphis chicken tenders while Rebecca almost always gets a muffaletta :)
This is one of our favorite places to grab lunch! Reasonably priced, quick, and some of the best Mexican food you can get in the Yoop.
