July 2005, Marshall and I were both making grocery store runs for our parents at Bi-Lo grocery store. We parked at the same time (only a few spots from each other). We greeted each other and walked into the store (we knew of each other from HS sports). The good Lord ordered our steps to meet again at check-out. At that time Marshall asked for my number, but I didn't give it to him. Instead, I took his number. A few days later, my heart led me to give him a call. That phone call along with saying "yes" when he asked me take his hand in marriage were the best decisions of my life. Marshall and I officially became a couple September 3, 2005. We dated throughout high school, college, graduate school, and careers. A majority of our relationship was long distance. Marshall went to college in Tennessee and I went to college in Georgia. What we have is built on a strong foundation of love. And through the distance, we were able to persevere. We have learned the blessings that come with patience, faith, and obedience. God has blessed us individually and as a couple. And during the years of long distance, He was preparing us for a lifetime together. On September 2, 2018—we will officially become one exchanging our vows before God, our family, and friends.
On July 9, 2017, my oldest sister, Kulisha, had a full day planned to celebrate her birthday (so I thought). She sent a group message a few weeks prior asking us (Val, Mama, & I) to mark our calendars to have brunch, go to the nail salon for manicures and pedicures, and shop at a few thrift stores. Nothing out of the norm for us. We had a great breakfast at Mama's. Afterwards, we went to the nail salon. Once we were done at the nail salon, we walked down to the thrift store (which used to be Bi-Lo). As I was shopping, Marshall along with our family and close friends were sneaking in. I had no idea they were in the store. I was too focused on thrifting. Many were hiding behind clothes racks. Some were hiding in dressing rooms. And others, I just didn't see. As I was standing at the counter to check-out, I looked and my college roommate was coming around the corner. I immediately knew what was going on because she had her phone out to record a video. And then it hit me....I was in the same exact store where Marshall and I met in 2005! After crying my eyes out, Marshall grabbed my hand and proposed in front of our family and friends. I've witnessed several proposals, but this was by far my favorite. It was perfect! Marshall's intentionality, preparation, and thoughtfulness was evident and of course, I said YES! After the proposal, we had a surprise engagement party to celebrate with more of our family and friends. The theme of the party was “Chick Said Yaaaasss”—for the Chick-Fil-A fan! :) Check out the pictures from the party on the 'Photos' tab.
