While the Hinge dating app may consider the distance of Alameda, CA to San Francisco to be under 10 miles, the actual travel time is typically a 45 minute drive with no traffic. For 3 years, we traversed the 20 mile route through the heart of the City, to spend a few hours together that barely beat out how much time we spent in the car. It was all worthwhile since we were able to bond over our love of sports (Go Pack Go), movies, good food, lazy days indoors, strolls along the beach, and spending time with good company. We took turns paying the toll, trading time in traffic for more time together. The pandemic also added a challenge as it made date opportunities even more limited than they already were. Thankfully in 2022, Rachel won the Battle of the Bay and Brandon moved to Oakland. We've been chillin on the couch together ever since. On September 9, 2023, Brandon proposed in Pacific Grove, CA near where we took our first vacation together. We're so excited to celebrate with you all in Hawaii, and look forward to our lives together.
We realize a destination wedding is a lot to ask of our guests, and we appreciate the effort of those that are able to attend. Oahu holds a special place in our hearts. Brandon's maternal grandparents (Hal Okita and Rowena Kekua-Okita) were born in Honolulu, and lived a majority of their lives on Oahu. He spent many summers and holidays there visiting his family, and lived with his grandparents for a time after college. Both Mamaw and Papaw are laid to rest beneath the iconic vista of Diamond Head. We hope that having Diamond Head in view during the ceremony will make it feel like they are also there celebrating with us. Rachel's maternal great-grandfather, Henry Garcia, immigrated to the United States from the Philippines. As part of his travels to the States, he spent a few years on Oahu with his family. During this time, he worked in Waikiki on the buildings that would become the Royal Hawaiian Resort. As we celebrate our union, it's special to know that our families may have already crossed paths and that we are benefiting from their hard work. Our trips to Hawaii have helped strengthen our bond, and we have so many fond memories that it only felt right to celebrate our wedding there. We hope this is an opportunity for you to create new memories of Oahu with us.
