How They Met

It was about four years ago when Julia got a text from her brother, Brad, asking if she was interested in meeting his friend, Alex, at an event downtown. Julia was new to San Francisco and excited to meet new people in the city. Over the next few years after their initial meeting, Julia and Alex became friends and would meet up every so often to catch up and check in with each other about life. Throughout that time they were each at various stages of the San Francisco dating scene, just not with each other… …timing was just never right...until it was... ...and when it was...it was perfect!

How They Started

On President's Day 2020, Alex invited Julia over to catch up after the holidays. What started as a casual chat over a glass of wine and a cheese board, turned into hours of deep conversation about life, dreams, goals, everything. While they had had many conversations over the years, this one was different and their connection was palpable. They both had secretly been interested in each other and the timing was finally right...in more ways than they knew. Three weeks after they began seeing each other, San Francisco was shut down due to the pandemic. It was a very scary time for everyone, and also a very exciting time for Julia and Alex. While the pandemic took so much away from their lives, it also gave them a gift…the gift of time. Julia and Alex spent the first months of their courtship talking for hours and hours every evening. They shared stories of their lives, their families, their values, goals, fears, faith, hopes and dreams, their views on the world, everything. They knew this time together was precious and they felt their bond was growing deep.

How They Knew

They also had a LOT of fun! Their shared passion for exercise and cuisine led to many runs together (Julia always requested a 10 minute head start!) and evenings sipping wine and cooking together with music playing in the background. They developed this beautiful, unspoken dance around the kitchen as they worked in tandem exploring new recipes. Impromptu dance parties in the middle of the kitchen also became a regular occurrence. And they laughed…a lot!!! Julia and Alex learned more about each other as they took interest in each other’s hobbies. Julia fell in love with Alex’s patience and steadfastness as he taught her how to ride a bike with clip in pedals. She was quickly bitten by the “cycling bug” which led to many cycling trips to Sonoma and Golden Gate Park. Alex fell in love with Julia’s passion for learning and excitement for trying new things as she explored many hobbies – puzzles, DIY manicures, houseplants, journaling, gardening. Together they started a small herb garden and felt pride when they used fresh herbs in their cooking. They even grew a single pepper that first summer, but unfortunately it died before they harvested it. There were lots of lessons learned as they developed their green thumb! While most of their first year was filled with the highs of new love, they also bonded over the emotional trials brought on by a global pandemic. Julia showed Alex compassion and warmth as he shared his deep sadness for missing the birth of his first nephew, and missing summer holidays and birthdays with his family. Alex showed Julia benevolence and tenderness as she shared her pain for being away from family, especially her young niece and nephew, and fear for the safety of her parents who were on a cruise ship across the globe when the pandemic hit. They were there for each other through it all, and their love only deepened.

Happily Ever After

To say their courtship was unconventional would be an understatement. While it took three years for them to figure out they both wanted more than just friendship, it took less than a year for them to know they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. Julia and Alex will forever cherish the gift of time.
