COVID-19 Information

Italy has updated its entry requirements for American tourists, allowing them to avoid testing or quarantine measures upon arrival. The new rules allow fully vaccinated tourists from the United States to skip pre-arrival testing and quarantine by presenting their white Centers for Disease Control and Prevention vaccination card. The requirements comply with Italy's "Green certificate." Unvaccinated travelers are still welcome but are required to show proof they contracted COVID-19 and recovered or show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or rapid antigen test taken within 48 hours of their departure. Children under 6 years old are exempt from pre-departure testing. All travelers must also fill out a passenger locator form prior to departure. We will continue to update this section with more information as things progress and change over the summer.

Passport and Visa Information

Everyone will need a passport in order to fly from the U.S. to Rome, but you should not need a visa. Currently, U.S. citizens can stay in Italy for up to 90 days without a visa before you are considered an illegal immigrant. If this policy changes we will let you know. Your passport does need to be valid for at least 6 months after your intended departure date. If your passport is set to expire within that window, you will need to renew your passport before you leave for Italy. Click on the button below to find out more information on how to obtain or renew your passport. Please make sure you have your passport in your carry on luggage when you board the plane from the States. You will not be able to access your checked bags before going through immigration to obtain it. If you are not flying direct, you most likely will go through immigration during your layover and not have to do it when you land in Rome.

Flight

FCO

Rome has 2 airports and we recommend that you fly into Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino. Since it is the main airport, you will be able to choose a flight from a wider selection of airliners. For your arrival into Rome expect to wait at immigration, unless you went through the process in another Schengen country during your layover, and to wait again for your baggage.

Rental Car

Rome Chauffeur

This is a great car service you can hire to take you to your hotel instead of a taxi. You can make the reservation online and someone will track your flight and meet you at the airport with your name on a sign. The service does require you to pay in cash (euro) at your drop off location so please make sure you have enough with you before leaving the airport. Your confirmation email will include the total cost. We regularly use this service for guests visiting Loyola Chicago's campus in Rome and Mary booked it for Mike the first time he visited the city!

Travel Note

Taxi Information

From the airport, a taxi to the center of Rome shouldn’t cost more than 50-60 euro, depending on your destination. After exiting the baggage claim, follow the signs that indicate TAXI. It will take you outside the terminal. Once outside the terminal there will be a clearly marked ORANGE sign that says "TAXI"with a line. You will need to get in that line to take an official taxi to your destination. Taxi drivers often require you to pay in cash, so make sure you have plenty of euro on hand before leaving the airport. After exiting the baggage claim, DO NOT accept a ride from any private taxi drivers inside the terminal (even when they attempt to help you with your luggage). These drivers may take you on a roundabout way to your destination and up-charge their services. Do not engage with anyone who asks if you need a ride.

Hotel

Hotel Information

We recommend staying near the church, as it is in the heart of the historic district and near many sites that you will want to see. Some other neighborhoods of Rome that you may find enjoyable to stay in are: - Prati: For a quiet, well-connected part of town, Prati is the best bet for any first-timer. It’s easy to get to by metro, convenient for the Vatican, has many good hotels to choose from. - Trastevere: Over the river from the historic center, Trastevere is what you possibly think of when you think of Rome with its picturesque, medieval cobble-stoned streets, and vibrant piazzas. - Testaccio: The perfect location for foodies! There aren't many hotels, but an AirBNB would be interesting here and the nearby Aventine hill has some luxury hotels. - Monti: A short hop away from the Colosseum and Forum, Monti is a favorite haunt of Rome’s boho set and exudes a laid-back village vibe with its hipster boutiques, popular bars, and excellent restaurants

House Or Rental

Airbnb

It is very easy to find affordable accommodations through Airbnb. Please make sure you pay attention to their check in time compared to your flight arrival time as it may be difficult to drop your bags or check in early if you arrive too soon.
