FAQs

Here is a list of common questions we’ve received, along with their corresponding answers, regarding: A) Questions related to the wedding 💍 B) Questions related to travel preparation ✈️ C) Questions related to practical information during the trip 🌎 D) Questions related to local customs and culture 🌟
Question

𝗔) 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 💍

Answer

Find essential information and answers to common questions about wedding preparations and formalities.

Question

A.1) 👶 Are children welcome at the wedding?

Answer

Yes! We will have a nanny on-site so parents can fully enjoy the evening. 😊

Question

A.2) 👗 Is there a dress code?

Answer

No strict dress code, but we encourage you to wear your best attire. The setting is beautiful, and you’ll definitely want to take some great photos. 📸✨

Question

A.3) 🌳 Will the day be indoors or outdoors?

Answer

The day will mostly be outdoors. The hacienda has a hard floor, but dinner will be in the garden on the grass, and the dance floor will also have a hard surface. It usually doesn’t rain this time of year, but we have a backup plan. If the weather doesn’t allow us to stay outside, the ceremony and reception will take place inside the hacienda. 🌞🌧️

Question

A.4) 🎉 Are there any activities planned before or after the wedding?

Answer

The night before the wedding, we’re organizing a welcome outing for those who are already there. Celebrating our wedding in Mexico is also a great opportunity to enjoy a few days of vacation together. Depending on everyone’s plans, we’ll try to organize group excursions for those interested. 🎉🌴

Question

𝗕) 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ✈️

Answer

Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your trip, from required documentation to climate, packing tips, and electronic devices.

Question

B.1) ✈️ What documents are needed to travel to Mexico?

Answer

To enter Mexico from Europe, you’ll need a valid passport. Europeans can stay up to 180 days without a visa. Make sure your passport is valid for the entire duration of your stay. 🌎

Question

B.2) ☀️ What will the weather be like?

Answer

Mérida has a tropical climate. In December, although it’s winter, it’s an ideal time to visit Mexico. You’ll enjoy plenty of sunshine with warm temperatures ranging from 25 to 30 °C (77°F to 86°F) during the day and around 20 °C (68°F) at night. Bring a light sweater for the plane, as the air conditioning can be chilly (and the blanket in economy class might not be enough, haha). 🌴

Question

B.3) 🧳 How should I pack?

Answer

Pack light clothing, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a cap (or buy one locally 😉). Hikers should bring appropriate clothing like pants and sports shoes. Don’t forget insect repellent. If you plan to snorkel, bring your own mask (or rent one locally). Water shoes are also handy for activities like waterfalls and boat trips. Items for removing sand at the beach can also be useful. 🕶️🩴

Question

B.4) 🔌 Will my electronic devices work there?

Answer

Mexican electrical outlets are the same as in the U.S. (but different from those in Europe). You’ll need a European/American or universal adapter. These are easy to find in specialty stores in Europe. In Mexico, the outlets are 110V/60Hz, while in Europe they are 220V/50Hz. Your camera, laptop, or phone should work fine. To be sure, check your devices’ voltage. Otherwise, you may need a transformer (for electric toothbrushes, hair straighteners, clippers, etc.). 🔌📱

Question

B.5) 💉 Do I need vaccinations before traveling?

Answer

No. No specific vaccinations are required or necessary to enter Mexico from Europe 🌟

Question

B.6) 🚑 What if I have a medical issue?

Answer

If you have a medical issue, you can visit any hospital or medical office in Mexico. A general consultation can cost between $15 and $45, depending on the location. You will need to pay these fees upfront. When traveling outside your region, it’s always recommended to get travel insurance. Check with your usual insurer or opt for specific travel insurance. 🚑 For example: https://www.yupwego.com/

Question

𝗖) 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽 🌎

Answer

Here’s everything you’ll need to navigate your trip smoothly: emergency numbers, destination safety, driving with your european license, road conditions, where to find gas, and more!

Question

C.1) 📞 Emergency numbers to know?

Answer

Yes, the emergency number in Mexico is 911, which you can use for the police, fire department, and ambulances. It’s also helpful to note the number of your embassy or consulate in case of need. 🚓🚒🚑

Question

C.2) 🌴✨ Is Mérida a safe destination?

Answer

The entire Yucatán Peninsula is known for being a safe tourist destination. Everything is in place to ensure the safety of visitors and guarantee a pleasant stay, which has allowed tourism to thrive over the years. You can plan your trip with peace of mind. 🧳🌟 🔒 With a safety score of 92.7, Mérida is ranked as the safest city in Mexico, the second safest in the Americas (after Quebec), and #30 globally. Mérida ranks alongside cities like: #28 Prague (93 points) 🇨🇿 #29 Helsinki (93 points) 🇫🇮 #34 Copenhagen (91.8 points) 🇩🇰 📉 Examples of cities in France: #249 Lyon (60.7 points) 🇫🇷 #263 Paris (58.0 points) 🇫🇷 #272 Grenoble (56.6 points) 🇫🇷 #282 Montpellier (55.7 points) 🇫🇷 #297 Marseille (53.8 points) 🇫🇷 🥘 Examples of cities in Spain: #43 Madrid (90.8 points) 🇪🇸 #66 Valencia (88.0 points) 🇪🇸 #90 Seville (84.4 points) 🇪🇸 #218 Barcelona (66.2 points) 🇪🇸 #227 Bilbao (64.7 points) 🇪🇸 🇺🇸 Examples in the USA: #232 Los Angeles (64.1 points) 🇺🇸 #206 New York (67.7 points) 🇺🇸 #258 Las Vegas (59.04 points) 🇺🇸 #223 Miami (65.6 points) 🇺🇸 #279 San Francisco (56.2 points) 🇺🇸 🔗 To see the full list of the safest cities in the world for 2024, visit here: https://ceoworld.biz/2024/01/27/revealed-safest-cities-in-the-world-2024/#google_vignette

Question

C.3) 🚗 Can I drive with my european driver’s license?

Answer

Yes, your valid driver’s license is sufficient to drive in Mexico. Be sure to carry it with you whenever you’re on the road. 🚗 However, your vehicle insurance won’t be valid in Mexico, so you’ll need to get coverage locally. If you’re renting a car from a local agency, ensure the insurance policy offers adequate coverage and is valid. 🛡️

Question

C.4) 🚦 Is the traffic code different?

Answer

The Mexican traffic code is quite similar to that of Europe, such as driving on the right, speed limits, mandatory seat belts, and the ban on using mobile phones while driving. The legal blood alcohol limit is between 0.05 g/liter and 0.08 g/liter, roughly equivalent to two strong tequilas. 🍹 However, stay vigilant as there are a few nuances: traffic lights are placed after intersections, and in cities, main avenues take precedence over other streets, with no right of way. If there’s no sign, you have the right of way, and others must stop. Also, speed bumps (topes) are a very Mexican specialty and can be found everywhere, sometimes unmarked. Mexican drivers have developed certain driving habits that may surprise you at first, but you’ll quickly get used to them. For example, if the vehicle ahead has its left turn signal on, it could mean they’re turning left or indicating that the road is clear for you to pass. 🚗💨 Similarly, if a vehicle activates its hazard lights, it means they intend to stop.

Question

C.5) 🛣️ Road conditions?

Answer

Road conditions are generally good in tourist areas like Quintana Roo and Yucatán. The road network mostly consists of long straight roads, allowing you to cover hundreds of miles safely. We recommend using toll roads, which are usually in better condition than free roads. Outside tourist areas, potholes become more frequent, and the roads are less drivable. 🌟🚗

Question

C.6) ⛽ Where to find gas?

Answer

Gas stations are found everywhere in the country, so it’s unlikely you’ll run out of fuel. In Mexico, gas is cheaper than in Europe, about 0.90€ per liter. ⛽ An attendant will fill your tank for you, so you don’t need to get out of the car—just tell the attendant what type of fuel and how many liters you want. It’s customary to tip (about 10 pesos). The attendant may also clean your windshield or check your oil levels and the overall condition of the car. If you’re renting a car, these services are usually unnecessary, but it’s up to you. If the attendant does all this, a tip of 20 pesos is appropriate. 💸

Question

C.7) 🕰️ What’s the time difference with Europe?

Answer

🌍 Mérida is in the Central Time Zone (UTC -6). In winter, there’s a six-hour difference with Europe. So don’t forget to adjust your watches! 🕰️

Question

C.8) 🛍️ Typical souvenirs to bring back?

Answer

Mérida is a true treasure for souvenir lovers! You’ll find handmade hammocks, embroidered cotton clothing, leather goods, silver jewelry, and beautiful pottery. Local markets and small artisan shops are full of these treasures. Leave a little room in your suitcase to bring a piece of Mérida back home with you! 🎁

Question

C.9) 📍 Additional tourist information?

Answer

For more tourist information, visit the local tourist office located in downtown Mérida. They offer maps, brochures, and great recommendations for your visits and excursions. And of course, check out their website and social media to stay updated! 🌐📚

Question

C.10) 💧 Tap water?

Answer

In Mérida, it’s recommended to drink bottled water. Although tap water is purified, old pipes may affect its quality. Fortunately, bottled water is easily available and often provided for free in hotels and restaurants. Stay hydrated safely! 🥤

Question

C.11) 📶 How to get internet?

Answer

Staying connected in Mérida is easy! You can buy plans with your phone provider, but apps like Airalo often offer better rates. https://www.airalo.com/ For even better service, get a local SIM card from a Telcel store. https://www.telcel.com/personas/amigo/paquetes/paquetes-amigo-sin-limite Additionally, most hotels and cafés offer free Wi-Fi access. 📱💬

Question

C.12) 💸 What currency is used?

Answer

The Mexican currency is the peso (MXN). You can exchange money at banks, exchange offices, and some hotels. ATMs also make it easy to withdraw pesos. Check your bank’s fees to decide if you prefer to pay by card or cash. 💳💵

Question

C.13) 💳 Can I pay by card?

Answer

Yes, credit cards are widely accepted in Mexico. However, always keep some pesos on hand for small purchases from street vendors or in small shops and markets, where cash is often preferred. This also avoids the 5% surcharge sometimes applied to card payments. 🥙💰

Question

𝗗) 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 🌟

Answer

Question

D.1) 🪙 Tipping?

Answer

💸 In Mexico, tipping is not included in servers’ wages as it is in Europe. It’s a way to reward excellent service. Here’s a quick guide on how much to tip: 10% of the total: minimum, but this may indicate dissatisfaction. 15% of the total: good, service was adequate. 20% of the total: great, service was excellent and deserves a reward. Of course, you can tip more if you wish, especially if the server made your experience unforgettable! 🌟

Question

D.2) 🌮 What’s the food like in Mexico? Is there meat? Vegetarian options?

Answer

🌮 Mexican cuisine is a true feast for the senses! You’ll find a wide variety of meats such as beef, veal, pork, turkey, and chicken, as well as fish and seafood due to the proximity of the sea. 🐟🍤 Fresh fruits and vegetables are also abundant, adding a touch of freshness to your meals. 🍉🍍 The differences with European cuisine mainly lie in the ingredients and preparation style. For example, tortillas often replace bread at the table, but you can request bread if you prefer. 🍞 🍝 If you’re craving something more familiar, don’t worry! There are many international restaurants, including plenty of Italian ones, to satisfy your cravings. Get ready to explore new dishes and fall in love with Mexican gastronomy! 🌮🌟

Question

D.3) 🥗 Vegetarian options?

Answer

For vegetarians, there are also many delicious options. You can enjoy typical dishes made with vegetables, beans, corn, and of course, the famous tortillas! 🌽 Fresh fruits are also abundant, adding a touch of freshness to your meals. 🍉🍍

Question

D.4) ⏰ What time do people eat?

Answer

Generally, lunch is around 2 PM and dinner around 9 PM, similar to Spain. But don’t worry, restaurant kitchens stay open all day, so you can eat at a time that suits you. There’s no restriction on the type of food or time, so if you want grilled fish for a late snack or a cappuccino at 10 PM, you’ll likely find a place that’s open! 🌮✨

Question

D.5) 🍽️ Meal pace?

Answer

📝 If you want appetizers and main courses served successively, it’s best to let the server know. This way, you can enjoy each dish at your own pace while soaking in the warm and convivial atmosphere of Mexican meals. ✨

Question

D.6) 🤒 Risk of stomach problems?

Answer

Whenever traveling abroad, there’s a risk of an upset stomach. It’s not a matter of hygiene but rather an adjustment of your gut flora to a new environment. 🌍 🍲 To avoid this, make sure to eat well-cooked foods during the first week to give your gut flora time to adapt. You can also strengthen your system by taking probiotics before and during your trip. Your pharmacist can advise you on this. 💊🌿

Question

D.7) 🤝 Local customs to respect?

Answer

Mexico, like Europe, is part of the Western world, so customs are quite similar. For example, it’s polite to greet people with a handshake or a light hug. Women may give one kiss on the cheek, but men typically don’t kiss. 🤝💃 Dress appropriately when visiting churches (which are Catholic like in Europe, but more colorful). ⛪👗 It’s courteous to say "buen provecho" (enjoy your meal) before starting to eat. 🍽️ Say "Buenos días" (good morning) when entering and "hasta luego" (goodbye) when leaving a shop. 🛍️ In summary, the same politeness habits as in the Europe apply here. 😊🌟
