In October of 2022, we planned a trip to Chimney Rock, North Carolina over my birthday weekend in January. We were celebrating 10 years together along with my birthday! We decided to spend a night in Gatlinburg, TN before checking into our amazing cabin for the weekend! We enjoyed a night out on the town to celebrate my birthday and woke up the next morning to drive through the Smokies. It was something I really wanted to do and even though I was putting off his plans he did it anyways! Our whole plan was to hike Mount Mitchell, the highest peak on the east coast! And they were expecting snow so we brought all our gear to hike it in the snow! When we tried to gps our way there it just would not take us there! It kept saying unable to provide directions. So we decide to just head to our cabin but wanted to hit the store first as he was going to make us a nice dinner in that night! Well silly me lol, as we come to a road closure and they inform us it will be hours and our best bet is to go around the mountain. I look at our directions and it doesn’t seem to have added the store so we trek around the mountain to the grocery store. Upon finishing our shopping, we pull gps back up and it’s telling us there’s a road closure again! We figured out that we had actually already drove past our cabin the first time and after spending 5 hours in the car on a trip that was supposed to take an hour we finally got to the cabin! It was amazing! We made dinner and soaked in the hot tub and we’re hoping the get to Mount Mitchell the next day! I woke up super early just in time to watch the sunrise in the hot tub and it was breath taking! I checked Mount Mitchell and the parkway was still shut down so we spent the day in Chimney Rock. It’s such a cute little town! So again, the next morning we wake up to find that the parkway is still shut down. We found at that the 2-4 inches of snow they were calling for turned into 24 inches! Bummed, we decided to Chimney Rock State Park! We hiked all the open trails they had which wasn’t many! This is where he had to get creative! The whole time he had planned to propose on Mount Mitchell and nothing was going his way! He was so good at hiding it all because I literally had no idea! There was even a closed section to the waterfall that he helped himself to while I stayed back, I’m a rule follower! In hindsight I probably ruined another opportunity for him! So we begin to walk back down the trail and he finds a rock for us to sit on and still I’m oblivious! He asks if I want a water and acts like he’s grabbing one and before I can even glance back he whips around on one knee with a little black box! He said he had a whole speech prepared but in the moment he was actually speechless which was super cute! Nothing worked out like he planned but it was the most perfect weekend regardless!
