It all began in Señora Spector's high school Spanish class in 2016 when Kaitlyn and Carlos were seated next to each other. The two quickly became good classmates and friends throughout that year. Despite Kaitlyn going off to Shenandoah University and Carlos staying in town at George Mason University, their friendship grew throughout the years. In the fall of 2020, they went to Auld Shebeen Irish Pub for their first date. What started as friendship quickly turned into love.

In the summer of 2023, Kaitlyn and Carlos traveled to Cleveland, TN for her first clinical rotation for PT school. During the first weekend there, Carlos suggested going to Fletcher Park to enjoy the outdoors, eat a nice picnic, and debrief the week they had. To capture the moment, they took some nice candid pictures, since they were dressed up from the earlier Church service. Toward the end of pictures, Carlos suggested they do a "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" pose with their backs to one another. Surprise! Kaitlyn turns around to Carlos on one knee holding a gorgeous diamond ring. After lots of happy tears and smiles, Kaitlyn accepted! The day concluded with sharing the excitement with their loved ones and getting celebratory sushi for dinner.
