It was the fall of 2008. Freshman Orientation Day at Salem State College. I was trying to get the attention of one of my friends, shouting their name from across the lawn. For some reason, this guy kept turning around and looking at me. I kept giving him the "Can I help you?" look, because I wasn't trying to get his attention. Come to find out, he was looking back because he shared the same name as the friend I was yelling to! After our first (awkward) interaction, we continued to somehow bump into one another. We realized that we had mutual friends. My good friend was dating one of his roommates. We spent a lot of time in their dorm room, hanging out and studying together throughout the rest of the school year. Sophomore year was very much the same as our first year at college. Now, we are living in the same dorm. We spoke almost everyday and we became the best of friends. We were there for each other in some of the hardest times of our lives. We could say anything to one another without fear or passing judgement. We loved spending all this time together that we thought it would be fun to begin traveling! This became "Our Thing." Any chance we could get, we would get in our car and just drive. We visited every New England state together, except Vermont. We would drive endlessly, looking at beautiful houses and listening to some of our favorite tunes, until we could find a body of water to sit at and admire. Soon enough, Cris became a father. I visited him often, offering a helping hand with feeding, bathing and diaper changing. I was a vital role in his children's lives and soon enough we became a little family. It wasn't until December 24, 2019, when Cris made it official by asking for my hand in marriage. It was the greatest Christmas gift of all! And it was in that moment when I realized just how grateful I am for having grabbed his attention that one fall day in 2008.
