How We Met

Facebook Requests, First Kiss, First Day of Classes

Amanda and Matt first met at Binghamton University in Spring 2015, when Matt went to his friends’ dorm who happened to live on Amanda’s floor. Later in the semester on a night out, Amanda, a ballsy freshman, approached sophomore frat bro, Matt, on State Street (string of bars in Binghamton) to say “Hey - Thanks for friending me on Facebook!” Over the next remaining weeks of the semester, Matt tried his best to close the deal, but was unsuccessful. Fast forward to the fall, before classes started, the two reconnected on State Street once again. They shared a few drinks, some laughs, and a first kiss on September 1, 2015. Once classes began the following day, their serendipitous schedules made the two inseparable… Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays kibitzing in Yiddish 101, and Tuesday and Thursdays giggling in their Stand-Up Comedy class. A huge thank you to Professor Gitl and Professor Vaughan for allowing Matt to flirt with Amanda all throughout class and being easy going about Amanda’s tardiness due to Matt’s inability to be on time.

The Proposal

12/17/2021

Amanda scored an NYC internship the summer of 2017 and needed a place to stay in the city. Her family friends, the Sallustios, kindly allowed Amanda to live in their Hell’s Kitchen apartment. Matt joined her. And he continued to join her for another winter and summer – despite having a place of his own. It became the first place the two lived together, celebrating two of Matt’s birthdays, a Hanukkah, and hosting a small party (sorry Sallustios). It is safe to say, a lot of memories were made there, and it was a place that held a lot of significance to both of them. When it came time for a proposal, Matt thought there’s no better location than the Hell’s Kitchen apartment. With the help of Amanda’s sisters, Sami and Julia, as well as Jillian and Emily Sallustio, Matt devised a plan for “a girl’s night out” to The Rockettes. The GNO was set for 12/17/2021. 12/17/2021 - Finally the day has come, but so has another COVID variant. That morning, The Rockettes were canceled for the remainder of the season. Amanda, of course, begins suggesting alternative options that would screw up the entire plan. With the support of her sisters and friends, she was convinced to throw on a pair of jeans and put herself together for a lowkey night of drinks and dinner in Hell’s Kitchen. When Amanda finally arrived at the Sallustio apartment, she quickly learned there was no girls' night. Instead, she walked into an apartment full of candles, rose petals, and Matt waiting to ask her a very important question. The rest is history… A few photos, glasses of champagne, and Facetimes later, the couple celebrated their engagement and have no plans of stopping. Both Amanda and Matt thank their siblings, Lauren, Josh, Jason, Ashley, Sami and Julia and all the parents for being so helpful and thoughtful with pulling off this surprise.

The Past Eight Years

Friends, Family, Vacation & Fun!

The past seven years have been full of amazing memories, spending time with family and friends, vacationing, and building a life together. Some highlights include the pair graduating from Binghamton -- Matt in 2017 and Amanda in 2018. Matt landed his first job at Yelp and moved into his first apartment, while Amanda finished out her senior year. This meant a lot of bus trips from NYC to Binghamton for Matt and a lot of trips home to Marlboro/NYC for Amanda. Amanda began at Hofstra Law and moved to Long Island, where the couple uncovered their mutual aversion to the LIRR and NYC street parking on the weekends Amanda would visit Matt. After surviving her first year of law school, Amanda studied abroad in Pisa Italy, while Matt left Yelp for a startup called Looker just before it was acquired by Google. Covid hit. Later that year, and with all things shut down in NYC and at Hofstra, Matt and Amanda moved into the Gerstman house in Marlboro. The Gerstman family learned a lot about Matt, and more importantly, Matt learned how to play mahjong. After some more time on Long Island, Amanda finished law school, passed the bar, and found her first job. Matt patiently waited to move back to the city, and finally, in June of 2021 the two moved to the Upper East Side and have been enjoying game nights, cooking dinners, and hanging out with all their pals!
