Avery had already been in college for a year and was in the sorority Adpi. She had already established friendships at a neighboring fraternity Ag Sig, where Trent joined the following year. Their first memory of seeing each other was after a date party that they had both attended. Avery's brother Spencer worked for Trent's dad. Spencer had previously mentioned something about a "Trent Oldham," so Avery decided to send him a picture saying "is this your boss' son?" Trent woke up the next morning to a text from his dad asking if he was out late studying because he had received the picture that Avery sent the night before. After that, the next date party Trent and Avery went together where he dressed up as a banana and her a monkey. This was the start to a kind of friendship/kind of dating thing that went on for years before it *finally* developed into a relationship that changed their lives forever.
Around November 2018, Trent and his mom were talking and she asked if Avery was "the one" because he never really talked about his thoughts. Trent's response was "I couldn't imagine a day without her." Trent's mom followed with "what are you waiting for?" Trent asked permission to marry Avery a few days before Christmas. He went ring shopping and took both moms to approve of his choice. Trent set the whole thing up. He "wasn't able to come visit" because he had to "work." He even had Avery's friend Kate make fake plans with her on Saturday. Avery was at home when Trent surprisingly walked through the front door and said "come on, we haven't been on a date in a while. Let's go get a nice dinner." He put on a sport coat with his jeans, so Avery decided to put on a dress. They went to the plaza and ate dinner at McCormick and Schmicks where they enjoyed themselves but choked down some oysters that Trent ordered because he was trying to be fancy. Dinner went quicker than planned, so thankfully they had some friends (shout out to Jared and Mikayla!) that were on the plaza that could help stall some time so Trent's photographer could get into place. Avery was completely oblivious to what was happening the whole time. They hopped in the truck and took off to The Scout, a statue overlooking Kansas City. They had previously been here before and Avery thought that he wanted to just sit and chat. She was so naive of the situation that she actually made a joke on the walk out to the spot saying "so this is when you propose, haha!" Turns out he was about to do just that. They walked out on the ledge and stood. Trent started saying sweet things and next thing Avery knew, Trent was on a knee and a photographer was taking pictures. They then went to Trent's parents where he had asked both families to come celebrate.
