How We Met

It Started with a Selfie

Lindsay and Arthur both attended the First Annual TopSpin Junior Board Gala in NYC in the spring of 2013 (thanks to the invitations from Lily and Graham and the promise of an open bar). After some mixing and mingling, they played the name game to discover they shared a few mutual friends from Lindsay's study abroad in Barcelona and Arthur's time at Duke. They snapped a selfie to send to Leonard Popplewell, but thanks to the terrible service at 404 NYC, the selfie was never sent. The two parted ways without swapping a single digit, and only the selfie in Lindsay's phone remained as a memento of their meeting. Fast forward a couple of months, when Lindsay spots "the selfie guy" across the room at the now-defunct 200 Orchard on the Lower East Side. She marches up to him, cell phone in hand, and shows him the picture: "Are you the selfie guy?!" It was, and the two decided to catch up over drinks in a more civilized establishment. Their first date was at Little Branch (the West Village speakeasy Lindsay was unable to find), followed by the also now-defunct Ditch Plains. Arthur told Lindsay that food was "kind of his thing," and that he made the "World's Best Egg's Benedict." She was skeptical, but intrigued. And the rest, as they say, is history.

How He Popped The Question

I LOVE YOU WILL YOU MARRY ME?!

"I won tickets to Hamilton in Chicago! Time for a trip!" And so began Arthur's ambitiously planned surprise. Chicago, where Arthur's been working since October 2017, also happened to be the ideal meeting place for the families to come together - from San Francisco, Minnesota, Montreal, and NYC - to share in the love and joy of the proposal. While there were actual Hamilton tickets as part of the rouse, the big surprise awaited Lindsay on Saturday, June 16 under the pretense of a "friends' engagement party"... that Lindsay very nearly missed for an afternoon nap. With an espresso and a "dressing drink", Arthur got Lindsay out of bed, and away they went. After a quick Uber ride, they arrived to the Adler Planetarium, with its stunning view overlooking the Chicago skyline. They posed for a picture and Lindsay felt a little square box in Arthur's blazer jacket. To her surprise, he dropped to his knee: "I LOVE YOU, WILL YOU MARRY ME!?" Five years after their first date, with Lake Michigan at their feet and with family secretly waiting back at the hotel with champagne and balloons, Lindsay and Arthur committed to forever.
