Ashleigh Apel

Bride

I am a country girl through and through! I grew up on a hobby farm in Sumpter, MI showing livestock in 4-H, camping, and hiking in the backcountry in Girl Scouts and Venture Scouts, riding 4-wheelers through the woods, and never afraid to work hard and get dirty. Definitely the ideal gal for Joshua, haha not! I have a younger brother, whose name is also Joshua, and an older half-sister whose name is Ashley. I know the family dynamics are very confusing. I graduated from Michigan State University twice, first with my Bachelor's in Animal Science, and second with my Master's in Youth Development. I currently work for Michigan State University Extension as the 4-H Program Coordinator in Wayne County. Together Joshua and I have 4 furry children, our 2 cats Oliver and Nala, and our 2 dogs Oreo and Georgie. Oh, we also have a fish named Elvis. I am so excited to be able to marry my best friend and soul mate this year! We have encountered so much during our short life together, both good and bad, and I know there is no one I'd rather do this life thing with. Also, I need to continue to push Joshua out of his comfort zone and teach him a thing or two. He may not be the country boy I always thought I would be with, but I guess he will do. Just kidding, I love him very much, and trust me, this is a very loving and nurturing relationship!

Joshua Klein

Groom

I am a Jewish boy from the suburbs that somehow ended up with a country girl and am getting married on a farm. I am also about to marry into a family that are die-hard U of M fans. How’d that happen? I guess opposites really do attract. I grew up in West Bloomfield, MI as an only child playing basketball, going to karate, and traveling to visit family. I graduated from Michigan State University with my Bachelor's in Mathematics and a Minor in Actuarial Science. I currently work for Willis Towers Watson as a Pension Outsourcing Benefits Analyst, meaning I help manage people's pension plans. I'm still an absolute sports geek, which means screaming at the TV in disgust when I watch the Detroit Lions or celebrating an MSU victory. I've made sure to drag Ashleigh to more sporting events than we can count. Half the time I have to explain to her what's going on, and the other half I spend screaming with her completely silent and still confused. I still go to karate at least once a week to teach and train as one of the youngest 3rd-degree black belts ever in my style. My relationship with Ashleigh never has a dull moment, as we're always looking for our next fun adventure. She has helped change me into someone I never thought I could be, always looking forward to doing something new instead of dreading it. I may not know how I ended up with a country girl, but I'm never letting her go. August 19, 2023 cannot come soon enough so I can officially call Ashleigh mine forever!

Stephanie Wozniak

Maid of Honor

Hello, my name is Stephanie Wozniak and I am excited to get to fill the shoes of Ashleigh's Maid of Honor. I am 27, married to my husband Keith of 6 years, and enjoy living a simple life with our two cats, Iris and Chester. I adore spending time with family and friends, photography, as well as exploring the great outdoors. I am in the process of getting back into school and shifting my career from early childhood education to the medical field. My end goal is within the next few years to become an Ultrasound Technician, but to work within pediatrics. I met Ashleigh in the spring of 2021 when she started at CYS and I've gotten to know her quite well after getting to be with her at work almost every day of the week. We worked together as a PreK teaching team and she was my partner in crime before she got a new job and moved on to bigger and better things! I can't wait to help in giving her the wedding of her dreams with the love of her life!

Robinson Gingerich

Best Man

My name is Robinson Gingerich. I grew up in southwest Michigan, near Kalamazoo. Some of my interests include beekeeping, snowboarding, and the outdoors. I met Joshua during my Junior year at Michigan State University. We were roommates for a year and a half. Joshua and I would hang out in the dorms, talk about MSU basketball, and play videogames involving rocket-car soccer. Some of my fondest memories were simply having breakfast together in the cafeteria early in the morning and sharing what projects we had planned. Both Joshua and I have trained in martial arts and we'd go to the karate club together. I got to know both Joshua and Ashleigh quite well while living in the dorms. And I'm excited to be a part of their journey into their new lives together.

Lisa McDonnell

Bridesmaid

Hi there! My name is Lisa McDonnell from a small place in the North of Ireland. Just across the ocean to emerald, green island. I am a dancer, first and foremost an Irish Dancer, but also Contemporary, Musical Theatre, hip hop and Ballroom dancer which is when I met Ashleigh. It was in 2017, I was on a study exchange trip to Michigan for 5 months. And I decided I would join the MSU Ballroom Dance Team. On the first night I was there, I went alone knowing no one and I was the only one with a strange accent. But I happened to see someone standing not too far away from me and I started to chat to them, and they were so lovely and made me feel a little less like a wide-eyed deer. And this was Ashleigh, and then we continued going to the ballroom dance team, with Ashleigh giving me many lifts back to my dorm and we became such close friends, and this has continued over the years. The first time I met Josh was over a video call and even when they were on a screen, I just knew they had something special, and I am so delighted they have come together to celebrate a lifetime of happiness together. Love you both and thank you for letting me be part of your special day.

Brendan Tilds

Groomsman

Hello, I'm Brendan Tilds. I've known Joshua since birth. We are godbrothers and I have been fortunate to grow up with him in my life. I recently graduated from the University of Michigan and currently work in the international relations sphere in Washington, D.C. I love working out, spending time outdoors, and have recently been getting into long distance triathlons. I'm so excited to meet you all and can't wait to spend this special day with everyone.

Holly Sysol

Bridesmaid

My name is Holly Sysol, I am 25 years old. I love animals, traveling, baking, and cooking. I have many pets, but not nearly as many as Ashleigh has.  I have 7 ducks, 11 chickens, 2 cats, 2 Russian tortoises, 6 rabbits, a cockapoo, and a welsh springer spaniel puppy.  I have known Ashleigh since I was 13 years old.  Ashleigh and I met through our bowling team freshman year of high school and quickly learned that we have a lot of very similar interests, making us fast friends.  Ashleigh and I share a love of animals and she helped enroll me into 4H which became a huge part of my life, just like it is for her.  She also loves to travel like I do, and we try to do small camping trips if feasible, as we both live very active lives as well.  Ashleigh and I are both teachers as well, I teach older kids while she teaches younger, and we often share stories about our jobs.  I also joined a bowling league with Ashleigh, Josh K, and Josh A.  We have bowled together for the past two years.  This has given me a chance to get to know Josh K better, and I can tell how strong of a bond these two have.  I am very happy and excited to see them get married in August, and am thrilled that I get to be a part of their special day.  I look forward to all the fun we will have at her wedding, and I can’t wait to see how happy the bride and groom look when they see each other at the altar.

Joshua Apel

Groomsman

Hi, I'm Josh Apel, Ashleigh's brother. So let's just get this out of the way first, I'm a groomsman, not the groom. I enjoy fishing, hunting, gaming, and football, especially U of M and Tampa Bay (go Tom Brady). Where I'm from, people like to call me the cow whisperer. In school, people would call me the juke box, as I sing songs on command or just because. I'm also a fountain of useless information, so if you're ever bored, just ask me for a fun fact, and I'm sure I'll blow your mind. I'm looking forward to having another brother in law. Well, at least some days. Other days I can't wrap my head around having 2 sisters with the same name, and a soon to be brother in law with my name. When Ashleigh started dating Josh, I was a little worried because he was a useless city boy who didn't know how to work a screw driver. He may not know as much as I do now, but over the years he's grown on me, and although he roots for MSU, I guess he can stick around. So as for the wedding, I'm just looking forward to the food, the booze, and the party. I wish Ashleigh and Josh well in their future endeavours. Yeehaw, now let's get this party started.

Sunny

Sunflower

Sunflowers symbolise loyalty, adoration thanks to the myth of Clytie and Apollo. And, because of their association with the sun, sunflowers are well-known for being a happy flower and the perfect bloom for a summer flower delivery to brighten someone's mood!

Beau Schulze

Groomsman

Hi I'm Beau Schulze, I'm studying Orthotics and Prosthetics at Oakland University. I am the VP of the Tennis Team at OU. I enjoy golf and bowling in my free time. Josh and I met the same way he and Ashleigh did, so we were basically meant to be friends. He was my division leader and we really bonded during our time at camp. The camp overnights, field trips, singing songs on the bus, playing GaGa ball, and hanging out outside of camp. Bowling was an activity that we both were interested in and I helped him learn to hook a bowling ball. Josh and I being from different cities and going to different schools has kept a distance between us physically but we stayed in touch the whole time. I am extremely honored to have been selected as one of his groomsmen and I could not be any more excited for him and Ashleigh. I'm beyond excited to stand up there with my friend and I'm really looking forward to the laughs, smiles, and dances we will all share on this monumental day.

Paige Sweet

Bridesmaid

Hi! This is Paige Sweet who has known Ashleigh since she was 8, which is over 13 years. She met Ash through 4-H where they were apart of the same club. After losing touch for a few years Paige worked for Ashleigh at Girl Scouts. During that time she met Josh and was able to participate in a dance marathon with both Josh and Ashleigh (where ash pied Paige in the face). Paige just graduated from Michigan State with a degree in marketing. She is currently in grad school.

Jonathan Butler

Groomsman

I’m from Winfield, IL which is a small town about hour west of Chicago. I met Josh during our time at Michigan State where we were tour guides together until I graduated in 2020. While we often spent time together with the tour program, I tagged along with him and Ashleigh to numerous MSU football games. Whenever I am not working or focusing on classes I enjoy watching sports, (professional football, college football, NHL) playing video games, running, and recently started lifting weights. A fun fact about me is that one time I went on a weeklong canoe trip in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota with my old boy scout troop. Best exercise of my life up there.

Aliyah McClain

Junior Bridesmaid

Hi, I'm Aliyah. I live in Tennessee. I like theatre, reading, drawing, playing volleyball, and hanging with my friends. My favorite color is green. I'm so excited to be a part of the wedding.

Cyncere McClain

Flower Girl

Hi, I'm Cyncere. I'm from Tennessee. I like everything that's cute, stuffies, things that are soft, playing softball and soccer. My favorite color is teal. I like pink and purple as well. I can't wait to be a flower girl.

Henry Desana

Ring Bearer

My name is Henry and I am Joshua's cousin. I am 7 years old and a first grader! I love school, superheroes, playing sports, creating treats, and spending time with family and friends. I can't wait to nosh on all of the treats at the wedding!

Clark Desana

Ring Bearer

My name is Clark and I am Joshua's cousin. I am 4 years old! I love sharks, making projects, playing with my brother, and dancing to Metallica (AKA "dinosaur rock 'n' roll music"). I can't wait to show off my dance moves at the wedding!

Roland Apel

Father of the Bride

I always wanted to be a father and was so excited when I found out we were having a child. We did not know we were having a little girl until the day she was born but I knew right away her name was going to be Ashleigh Nicole and her mother had really no say in her name. I always wanted a little girl named Ashleigh. Just because we were having a girl didn't mean I wasn't going to do all the things a father looks forward to doing with their kid. I took her to sporting events, hunting and fishing, taught her how to fix things, and how to be independent. I didn't always agree with Ashleigh's choices, like playing the trumpet, joining the swim team, and going to MSU (Go Blue!), but I still let her be her own person. Ashleigh was my easy child, she always listened to me, had good grades, and never chased boys, which made my job easy when she was a teenager. However, I knew that one day that would change and she would bring a guy home. I wasn't expecting him to be anything like Josh, since he did not grow up on a farm and had no idea how to fix things, but I at least knew he cared for my little girl and that we share a love of football. I enjoy the rivalry when U of M plays MSU. Also, it is like having my own child all over again because I can be a father to him too, and teach him the things I know and share new experiences with him. I cannot wait to walk Ashleigh down the aisle and give her to someone who is going to take care of her but also let her be independent.

Renee Apel

Mother of the Bride

Hello I'm Renee, Ashleigh's mom. I'm not one who enjoys the spotlight so things like this can be a challenge for me. My children and my animals are my favorite things in this world and I love spending my time with them. Ashleigh, to the one who made me a mother, it was one of those long sleepless days when you first came into my life. I did not know much about being a mother, holding you in my arms so little and new, rocking and singing you back to sleep. that's when I knew a whole new journey awaited us. There were good and bad times but we were growing and learning together. Then suddenly one day I closed my eyes only to open them to an incredible, beautiful young woman who is now starting off her new journey in life. Now to Ashleigh and Joshua I will give you one small piece of advice; slow down, enjoy every moment, every minute, the good, the bad, it all matters. So when your journey comes time to change, just like it did for me, you'll have all the memories to hold onto as you begin the next step of your lives together.

Steven Klein

Father of the Groom

I was born in New York, but grew up in West Bloomfield. (See Amy’s bio for what happens next). I’m an avid reader, sports enthusiast and passed down my love of karate and basketball to Joshua. He still wears my karate patch on his gi. Joshua has been doing karate since he was 3 ½ years old, with the dojo a second home. And basketball from a participant in elementary school to assistant coach for the freshmen girls at West Bloomfield and of course member of the Izzone at MSU. Joshua loves to play, teach, and he’s a stats wizard. Always watching ESPN to get the latest updates. Ashleigh is the daughter we never had. She’s kind, thoughtful, a good cook, and has truly opened Joshua’s world to new adventures. We’re looking forward to the next chapter and helping you both continue to grow individually and as lifelong partners.

Amy Klein

Mother of the Groom

I grew up in West Bloomfield, Steve and I started dating the week after senior prom. I graduated from MSU with a degree in accounting. Go Green! Steve and I eloped in Las Vegas, then came home and had a Jewish ceremony officiated by Rabbi Roman. Joshua is everything we wanted in a child, which is why we only had one. Being a mother to Joshua has brought me so much joy, watching him grow up into the wonderful man he is today. Joshua is kind, smart, funny, a sports almanac, supportive, loving, a leader, team player, friend, and a true mensch. He is always looking to help others in need and is there when someone is in need. And as he tells the kids at karate-you can reach any goal if you keep trying and set your mind and heart to it. Even though Joshua has all these wonderful traits, the best thing that happened to him is Ashleigh. Ashleigh has opened Joshua’s world to so many new things–food, adventures, how to be a partner, and how to compromise. They really are wonderful together and push each other to always be their best. We’re so excited for the next chapter of their lives. We’re here to support any way we can, give advice and do what we can to help cross any hurdles they may encounter. Everyone always says when your son gets married, you’ll lose him to his wife. I feel just the opposite–I’m not losing Joshua to Ashleigh. I’m getting a stronger version of Joshua and gaining a daughter. And when the time is right, I’ll be thrilled to be a grandmother! We love you both!

Rabbi Norman Roman

Officiant

Hello, my name is Norman Roman, and I am so excited to officiate this wedding! I was ordained a Rabbi in 1975 and served Temples in Ohio and California before coming to Michigan in 1982, and then came to Temple Kol Ami (TKA) in 1986. I retired in 2016 and became part-time Rabbi in Green Valley, Arizona. During my time at TKA I was able to watch Joshua's mother, Amy, develop from a teenager into a wonderful adult, and eventually an outstanding mother. I've known Joshua for his entire life, blessing him at his bris when he was just 8 days old, commenced his Jewish studies when he was in Kindergarten, and finally blessed him at his Bar Mitzvah in 2012, welcoming him into Jewish adulthood. I had the honor of marrying Amy and Steven in 1995, and once again feel honored that Joshua and Ashleigh have asked me to be a part of their special day. I am looking forward to seeing familiar faces, and also meeting new ones, as we celebrate Joshua and Ashleigh's love by having them join in marriage.

Oreo

Best Dog of Honor

Woof Woof, my parents are getting married and I am so excited they are allowing me to come and join them on their special day. They say I am a good boy and need to be the goodest boy when I walk them down the aisle. I don't even know what that means, I just hope there are lots of snacks. My mom and dad call me a Leader Dog reject, well that is what I am. The humans said I failed, but I know I cheated the system because I am too lazy to work the rest of my life. Mom and dad love taking me on their adventures. Camping and car rides are my favorite. I also love when mom takes me to the farm to visit Lacey (she's my best friend) and I get to chase all the other animals and get good smells. But I very much enjoy staying at home all day with dad while he works because that is when I can be my laziest version of myself. Can't wait to make so many new friends on the big day!

Georgie

Honorable Ring Puppy

Hello everybody, I'm the newest addition to the family! I wasn't supposed to come until after the wedding, but here I am, stealing all the attention. I was born on November 7, so I'm still trying to figure out this whole life thing. I live with a big dog that I get to play rough with, and two cats that I'm always chasing. Mom can't get enough of my ears, and dad can't wait until I grow up so I stop peeing in the house. As for this whole wedding thing, I'm sure I'll be the center of attention, just like I am at home. If not, at least I'll have my big brother to help me walk mom down the aisle. But if all else fails, GIVE ME ALL THE TREATS AND SNUGGLES!!

Oliver

Best Cat of Honor

Meow, my name is Oliver but my parents call me Ollie. I am a total crazy cutie cat, according to mom. I came to her accidentally by surprise during the pandemic. I was found in an alley behind a Pet Smart when I was a kitten. She wasn't looking for a cat at the time but her friend Kayla, who found me, talked her into keeping me. It was the best thing she ever did because I am the best thing that ever happened to her... shhh don't tell dad I said that. I am a total mama's boy, we love to snuggle and I greet her every day when she comes home from work. I love meeting new people, watching the squirrels, and car rides. One of these days I'll convince dad to buy me a stroller so I can go on walks with them and Oreo. I am so glad we are keeping dad too, he's a pretty great guy, I love playing hide and seek with him. Too bad he won't let me come to the wedding though, I guess he's afraid I'll get lost, which is valid since I love to explore.

Nala

Honorable Flower Kitty

My name is Nala, however, for some reason, my parents always call me the baby and they say it in this really annoying and high-pitched voice. I love my brother Ollie, he's actually the only one I truly care about, most of the time I only pretend to like my parents when I want something. I love taking naps and hiding in small spaces. I am so glad they are leaving me at home for the wedding because home is my safe place and I'd rather be here away from them and all the other people. I never quite understood Ollie's fascination with humans, they are smelly and scary.
