On the day of February 1st, 2020, Ky woke up to celebrate what he thought would be the loneliest Black History Month ever. Looking for a “friend” to celebrate with, Ky posted an ad on the queer dating app “Lex” and lo and behold…there she was! Anupama! Our first date was February 9th, 2020 and on our 11th date we went to see the Agnes Deyne exhibit at The Shed and were blown away! While we were having a great time getting to know each other, there was a growing anxiety about the world and the pandemic. Instead of risking not seeing each other for an unknown amount of time or until the pandemic was over (which it’s not), we decided to shack up and quarantine together!! We went into this new adventure with the agreement that if things didn’t work out, we’d still be friends. Ky’s theory was and still is “vibes is vibes”, which means if you’re having a good time, keep having a good time!
We like to say we are still on our 11th date! And the vibes are still vibing and we are still having a great time! We decided to move in together October 2020. We knew we were each other's person and neither of us wanted to be apart from the other. Ky proposed March and April 2021 and then again September 2021 - each time unique and special and each time Anu said yes (she needed that ring!) In July 2021 we rescued Rusty our now 1 year old sweet and silly dog and continue to dream and plan for the rest of our lives together (which will include more animals!) And on October 1, 2022 we hope to have you witness our union and then celebrate in our love!
We want you to have a great time at our wedding and we want everyone to be safe! Everyone is required to rapid test the day of and show proof of your negative rapid test at the door (store bought rapid tests are fine). If you are not able to rapid test before you get to our celebration, don't worry! We will have limited rapid tests at the door. Please arrive at 5pm if you know you will need to rapid test at the venue. If you test positive or have symptoms please stay home (and livestream the ceremony)! You will be asked to leave if you test positive at the venue. Masks are required in all indoor spaces. Yes, the cocktail hour is indoors. Please do your best to keep your mask on in between sips/bites. We will have windows and doors open and we will have air filters, and folks can step outside to eat/drink. Pease help us keep everyone as safe as possible by following this masking guideline. Should there be changes to the wedding due to Covid concerns we will be sure to let you know!
Our wedding will be nontraditional in many ways - much like us as individuals and our relationship. We are both queer and Ky is trans. We are proud of who we are and our wedding will celebrate and honor all of our identities - this feels especially important given the political climate we are in that wants to erase us. We resist by sharing our joy with you and celebrating our love. We will not be erased. There will be food! There will be drinks - alcoholic and non-alcoholic! There will be dancing to the amazing sounds of DJ Rekha (https://www.djrekha.com/)! We want you to bring your eating and drinking bellies, your dancing shoes, and your weirdness - let it shine! There's no dress code so wear what makes you feel comfortable and what you think makes you look sharp. Ultimately we want you to enjoy yourselves, and celebrate in our individuality and your own! If you have any questions please reach out to either Ky or Anu before the big day so we can help you out. And if you are not comfortable with any part of our union we ask you to consider not bringing your vibes and instead join us as we livestream our ceremony.
We will have more information about restaurants, places to visit, hotels, etc. coming soon!
The Brooklyn Society for Ethical People and Culture has 9 stone or cement steps with a metal railing in the middle of the staircase to enter the building. There is one step to go over to get into the building. There is one step over to get in the sunroom. There are 2-3 steps to get from the sunroom to the backyard. There is also a flat surface for entry that is a longer walk. There is an entrance next to the Brooklyn Society (to the right when facing the front of the building) connected to the school next door. It is an ~97 foot walk to the back and then a left turn by the playground equipment to walk about ~50 feet get to the seating area. It will be a slippery, rainy day so please be careful when moving around! All restrooms are on the ground floor (with additional restrooms up a set of staircase to 2nd floor if needed). All guests must have a day of Covid rapid test (store bought is fine) with proof of negative results (bring the stick or a picture of your negative result). If you have any symptoms or test positive, please stay at home and watch the ceremony via livestream (link in the next section!)
