In 2019, some girlfriends of mine decided to go on a preach-cation to Mandeville, Jamaica. We all were serving in foreign language congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses here in the United States. I was serving in American Sign Language in North Carolina and they were in Patwa in Georgia and New York. Before our trip we each agreed to check an extra bag to bring needed items to the island to share with the friends in the form of a POP-UP Shop! We had great success! As we prepared for our trip I thought I'd do a little research on the Sign Language congregation. I called a sister in the congregation. She was very helpful. Coincidently, there was a couple visiting her that served near me in the Myrtle Beach ASL congregation in SC! They ended up asking me if I could take a backpack of goodies to their friends serving in Jamaica as Special Pioneers. I was more than happy to support. When we arrived on the beautiful island of Jamaica, I realized three things: 1. I have no cell service. 2. I have no contact information for the couple. 3. I have no idea how I am going to get this backpack to them. LOL With a shrug of my shoulders I say to myself, "Eh, Jehovah will figure it out." Over the course of our trip I finally made it to the ASL field service group. You'll never guess who I met there...... Yep you got!! The Special Pioneer couple!!! I was so happy to be able to give them their backpack of goodies. Little did I know this would not be our last meeting. Later that year they came to visit family in Myrtle Beach. I came down to visit them and that is when life changed. We met for the first time. I will admit neither of us was looking for anyone. I know we were super happy with our single lives. But, we both agree that there was something different this time. Well, 4 years later, we have survived a pandemic, long distance, and life’s ups/downs and through it all we managed to nurture and grow a friendship filled with love, respect, and a deep appreciation for one another. From a small act of kindness and a little backpack came huge blessings!
